  • The Style, Technology and Organization of Sicán Mining and Metallurgy, Northern Peru

    Open Access•Izumi Shimada, Alan K Craig•ARTICLE•Chungara•2013•Cited by: 2

This paper explains what Shimada has termed a holistic approach to craft production and illustrates its value by discussing insights gained into the style, technology, and organization of Middle and Late Sicán (ca. AD 900-1,375) mining and copper-arsenic metallurgy. After a brief characterization of the geographical and cultural settings of pertinent research by the Sicán Archaeological Project (1978-present) and the holistic approach, we discuss…

  • El Niño flood deposits at Batán Grande, northern Peru

    Open Access•Alan K Craig, Izumi Shimada•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1986•Cited by: 14•References: 6

Recent construction of a 10 × 3 irrigation canal across the Batán Grande–Poma archaeological complex of northern Peru provided an opportunity for inspection of soil profiles and detailed sampling along a five km transect bisecting an important concentration of ceremonial structures built during the past 3000+ years. From laboratory analysis of 80 soil samples we conclude no long‐term irrigation agriculture was practiced in this area and it was un…

  • Speciation and Age Revision of the Atacaman Snail Bostryx variabilis Herm

    Open Access•Alan K Craig•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1985

Field evidence from the Atacama Desert of northern Chile indicates that the stratigraphic position of the land snail Bostryx variabilis Herm has been incorrectly assigned to a marine series of the lower Pleistocene. Isotopic dating proves that the snail is a recently extinct Holocene taxon requiring no special paleoenvironmental explanations for its presence. However, the snail appears to offer an example of stress-induced speciation in confirmat…

  • The Grouper Fishery of Cay Glory, British Honduras

    Alan K Craig•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1969

Fisheries are poorly developed throughout the western Caribbean. An exception is British Honduras where there is a substantial folk-fishery and the daily consumption of fresh fish is customary by the urban population. There are three ethnic groups of fishermen, with Mestizos from the northern cays providing leadership in the annual exploitation of an unusual concentration of grouper in the Cay Glory area. Timing of the occurrence allows surplus s…
