“This is a movement that is ongoing, and it will be ongoing until Black people are actually free”: An interview with Patrisse Cullors
“All is Vanity”: The Allegorical Dimension of Toni Morrison’s God Help the Child (2015)
Accounting for Toni Morrison’s “late style,” this article analyzes her last novel God Help the Child as pertaining to allegory. The allegorical dimension stems from the intratextuality of this short novel which takes up all the themes of the author’s oeuvre: child abuse, colorism, mother-daughter relationships. Certain major structural motifs (the quest) recur, but discreet narrative elements (such as the bath, for example) can also be singled ou…
BLM Militant Memoirs: Cartographies of a Movement and/or Portraits of Activist Selves
Dealing in turn with When They Call You a Terrorist. A Black Lives Matter Memoir (2018), by BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors, and Charlene Carruthers’s Unapologetic. A Black, Queer, and Feminist Mandate for Radical Movements (2018), this article first addresses these political activists’ works as belonging to the genre of militant autobiographies. It then analyzes Cullors’s memoir as private testimony on the American government’s rhetoric of terro…

Through a comparison between the two translations of Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), Françoise Brodsky’s Une femme noire (Le Castor astral, 1993) and Sika Fakambi’s Mais leurs yeux dardaient sur Dieu (Zulma, 2018), this article aims at assessing how each translator renders the black vernacular of the novel, as well as the opposition between Standard English and the “dialect” which turns the narration into a double-voiced text. An anthropolog…

Gold and Bones: Remains of the Quest in Song of Solomon
Gold and Bones: Remains of the Quest in Song of Solomon

Signifyin’ (on) Modernism: The Jagged Harmony of Their Eyes were Watching God

Modernism, Anthropology, Africanism and the Self
This chapter explores the work of Zora Neale Hurston, which operates not just between genres but between disciplines. It considers Hurston's double heritage: as a creative writer engaging with the cultural politics of the Harlem Renaissance and New Negro movement, and as an ethnographer operating within codes of disciplinary practice. Caught between the academic world and that of writing and publishing, her works are creative syntheses of the dic…

The Cambridge Companion to Toni Morrison
Nobel laureate Toni Morrison is one of the most widely studied of contemporary American authors. Her novels, particularly Beloved, have had a dramatic impact on the American canon and attracted considerable critical commentary. This 2007 Companion introduces and examines her oeuvre as a whole, the first evaluation to include not only her famous novels, but also her other literary works (short story, drama, musical, and opera), her social and lite…

“Mask To Mask. The ‘Real’ Joke”: Surfiction/Autofiction, or the Tale of the Purloined Watermelon Claudine Raynaud (bio) I think it was Geral I first heard call a watermelon a letter from home. After all these years I understand a little better what she meant. She was saying the melon is a letter addressed to us. A story for us from down home. Down home being everywhere we have never been, the rural South, the old days, slavery, Africa. That juicy…

Voix éthniques, ethnic voices. Volume 2
This second volume is a companion piece to GRAAT 9 "Ethnic Voices," edited by Claude Julien. It reflects more closely than the first the international participation in our 1991 conference sponsored by the GRAAT of Tours, the CERCA of Orléans and the CETANLA of the Sorbonne Nouvelle. Thanks to Chantal Zabus we have been able to reprint a bibliography of Ken Saro-Wiwa's work to introduce the volume. The essays bear witness to the ongoing work of th…
