The political economy of crisis and recovery in modern Greece
Fifteen years after the Great Recession, the Greek economy shows slow growth following a prolonged stagnation. This article examines the causes of Greece’s economic crisis and the factors behind its tentative recovery. Our analysis highlights the pivotal role of profitability, particularly changes in the net rate of profit, in both the crisis onset and recovery. The recovery relies heavily on increased exploitation through wage cuts and inflation…
An Investigation of the Net Social Wage Ratio in Nine European Countries, 1995–2018
This article estimates the net social wage ratio, in a panel of nine European countries for the 1995–2018 period. Assuming that indirect taxes are partly paid by labor, it is found that the net fiscal position of the working class is negative in eight of the nine countries. On the contrary, when indirect taxes are assumed to be entirely paid out of surplus value the net social wage ratio is positive and substantial in all countries. Using this pa…
Determinants of Marxian labor productivity in the Greek economy 1960-2020
This paper discusses productivity growth in the context of the Greek economy. Productivity of labor in the Marxian sense is estimated using the distinction between productive and unproductive labor, and it is compared and contrasted with its mainstream counterpart. Marxian productivity is generally higher in level and exhibits a higher average rate of growth than mainstream productivity. We also estimate econometrically the determinants of produc…
The net social wage in different welfare regimes
This article investigates empirically the net fiscal position of the working class in nine European countries for the 1995-2015 period. This is done through the estimation of the net social wage for wage and salary earners in those countries, characterized by different types of welfare states. The negative net social wage ratio in eight out of nine countries indicates that in advanced capitalism, the state budget redistributes income in such a wa…
Profitability Capital Accumulation and Crisis in the Greek Economy 1958–2009
This study examines the behavior of the main Marxian variables in the postwar Greek economy. The different phases of the capital accumulation process are distinguished and analyzed according to the movement of the rate of profit. The ‘golden age’ of the 1958–74 period of high profitability and strong growth was followed by the stagflation crisis of the 1970s and early 1980s. After 1985, and especially after 1991, the ‘neoliberal solution’ to the …
Marxist Theories of Crisis and the Current Economic Crisis
This paper uses data from the US economy and finds that among Marxist theories of crisis the marxian law of the falling rate of profit as a result of the increasing composition of capital explains the crisis of the 1970s and the end of the “golden age” of capital accumulation. Despite the dramatic increase in the rate of surplus value and the limited fall in the capital-output ratio profitability has not recovered sufficiently during the neoliber…
Marxian Macroeconomic Categories in the Greek Economy
This article presents an empirical analysis of the postwar Greek economy from a Marxist perspective. I discuss the methodological issues involved in the empirical definition and the measurement of key Marxian variables that describe the different facets of the process of income distribution and capital accumulation in a capitalist economy. Based on recent developments in Marxist empirical research, I calculate the rate of surplus value, the value…
Testing Marx
This article discusses a number of issues related to the empirical methodology for testing Marx's main arguments. It argues that a recent article in Capital & Class is plagued by methodological and empirical errors and that empirical examination of the validity of Marxian theory has to be based on a more unified and consistent methodological framework similar to that developed by Shaikh and Tonak (1994
