Bodily Dis-ease in Contemporary French Women's Writing: Two Case Studies
This article examines two twenty-first-century autobiographical accounts of the intense - and ultimately life-threatening - mental and bodily dis-ease endured by two young French women from adolescence into early adulthood. Annick Loupias's La Tortue sur le dos (2001) and Émilie Durand's Ma folie ordinaire (2006) are phenomenologically rich and visceral testimonies to their authors' experiences of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, other forms of…
Righteous Realism Versus Postmodern Play: The Israeli–Palestinian Conflict in Female-Authored French Fiction
This article analyses literary mediations of francophone Jewish attitudes towards Israel, and particularly towards the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Its primary corpus comprises two female-authored novels published during the Second Intifada: Olivia Rosenthal's Les Fantaisies spéculatives de J.H. le sémite (2005) and Chantal Osterreicher's L'Insouciance d'Adèle (2006). It demonstrates how these two texts represent antithetical stances towards Isr…
Performing ‘community’: Russian speakers in contemporary Britain
During the early 2000s Great Britain witnessed a considerable rise in numbers of the Russian-speaking former-Soviet migrant population.1 This has been the result of the greatly increased opportunities for migration in most former Soviet states, the eastwards enlargement of the European Union, and the economically driven relaxation of immigration regulations under the UK’s Labour government between 1997 and 2008.2 Although they patently form a lin…
Calibrating queer in the work of Didier Eribon
The first aim of this article is to provide an overview of Didier Eribon’s unique input to lesbian and gay politics and studies in France. The second aim is to examine the contours of his engagement with and critique of queer, bearing in mind that queer is, at least theoretically, opposed to the very predicate of fixed identity (such as lesbian and gay) and identity politics. In pursuing the second aim, the article will ‘calibrate’ to what extent…
La Mémoire de la Shoah: The Contentious Case of Soazig Aaron's Le Non de Klara
Soazig Aaron's Le Non de Klara (2002) is a prize-winning novel about an Auschwitz survivor and has been greatly lauded, by Jorge Semprún among others. This article attempts to convey the novel's status as a literary artefact of high aesthetic quality and to interrogate the complex ethical questions the work mobilizes. Two diametrically opposed responses to the novel are considered. The first holds that, while the non-Jewish Aaron (a pseudonym) ma…

Queer Paradox/Paradoxical Queer: Anne Garréta's Pas un jour (2002)
This paper shows how Anne Garréta's Pas un jour (2002) is a decidedly queer text, in both the new and the old sense of that contested epithet. I examine three interrelated concerns central to Pas un jour. First, I analyze Garréta's mediation of desire in general: her own experiences of it; modalities thereof which subvert more 'normative' models of lesbianism; and her convergences with other gay, but male writers and theorists of desire such as G…
Sapphism on ScreenLesbian Desire in French and Francophone Cinema
This title sets out to investigate and theorise mediations of lesbian desire in a substantial corpus of films, spanning the period 1936-2002, by male and female directors working in France and also in French-speaking parts of Belgium, Canada Switzerland and Africa.
Heterographies: Sexual Difference in French Autobiography
Within the domain of French literary analysis, gender criticism has until now focused primarily on women's writing and has drawn largely on the writings of French feminist theorists, even though male-authored texts provide an equally revealing window through which to analyze gender. Except by mainly male critics working predominantly in the field of gay and queer studies, the issue of how 'maleness' informs the construction of the self and the cr…
