Archiving an academic legacy
Michael Halliday’s and Ruqaiya Hasan’s estates have been found to include a large amount of unpublished materials: draft papers, research notes, photographs, comments on student papers and so on. They comprise important elements of their legacy and a potential research resource. In this paper we outline a project to preserve and digitise these materials and to make them readily available internationally. The project is being carried out under the…
Our last Luciferian pact
The paper argues for a semiotic – in fact, a grammatical – origin to a profound dimension of the human psyche: William James ( 1890 , 1920[1892] ) observed how there were far reaching effects from what he characterised as the “duplex self”. This ME/I relation requires cohesion, or co-ordination, much as first suggested by Hughlings Jackson and Théodule Ribot in the mid nineteenth century. The analysis of grammatical equations (identifying clauses…
Performing Statelessness
Performing Statelessness is a creative and practice-led research initiative that foregrounds stateless communities’ voices and lived experience to investigate what it means to be stateless in the context of Australia. This project extends the legal notion of ‘stateless’, generally used to discuss national citizenship, to stage an encounter between practicing artists who identify as having a First Peoples, asylum seeker or refugee background to un…
The pragmatism of drawing context networks
Linguistics has embraced the functional and contextual turn but, when building tools for systematic contextual description, we have not made as much use as we could of our own functional traditions. Rather, we have largely relied on the metaphors of law and rule, which do not adequately capture tensions between consistency and variability in how language and context relate to each other. Our aim in this paper is to show the economy and practicali…
The Promise of Artistic Research in the Asia Pacific
Artistic research has sought to gain academic legitimacy through adapting to scientific methods, while also retaining the mandate of the humanities in the reproduction of culture. In both cases, Western epistemologies have structured what constitutes knowledge and how it is circulated and shared. The contemporary university is far more connected to its local environment, bringing the potential of engaging broad publics in the life of the institut…
Context and text in scientific disciplines of English
As major world languages – Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese, for instance – become the medium of university networks, it may be the right time to take stock of the influence that English has had over the way the disciplines of humanities and sciences have been shaped, directed and evaluated, in particular in the second half of the 20th century. This paper is an attempt to understand some of the textual, linguistic and historical determinants of Di…
Libraries as redistributive technology
Australia is currently rolling out one of the most expensive and ambitious infrastructure projects in the nation’s history. The National Broadband Network is promoted as a catalyst for far-reaching changes in Australia’s economy, governmental service provision, society and culture. However, it is evident that desired dividends, such as greater social engagement, enhanced cultural awareness and increased civic and political participation, do not f…
Platforms and public participation
The concept of the ‘platform’ has recently received extensive analysis in media studies and urban planning. This paper explores the platform’s contemporary emergence as an expression of a new archival logic that questions the possibility of a democratic politics of participation. ‘Public participation’ in the platform invokes the individual in the form of a consumer with a profile rather than as a citizen of a state. This paper returns to Claudio…
Technique and empire in the poetry of Ee Tiang Hong
Despite his high profile in poetry anthologies and in the commentaries of specialists in South East Asian literature, the craft of Ee Tiang Hong has not been subject to close investigation. Systematic attention to the linguistic organization of his poems brings out Ee's command of resources more general to speakers of English than the localistic lexical items and idioms which are overt signals of his provenance as a sensibility, but are not synon…
Class analysis, culture and inequality in the information society
This paper argues that class analysis contains important tools for understanding contemporary socio-economic inequality in the new media environment. For research seeking to promote the reduction of inequality, the Marxian class analytical tradition has two important features: (1) it identifies collectively-held interests in contrast to the methodological individualism of neo-classical economics, thus providing a basis for political action; and (…

Net Neutrality
This article considers the debate on 'network neutrality', and the idea that the internet should carry all internet traffic equally without prioritising different kinds of traffic or discriminating among types of content. It considers contemporary developments in the internet and its business models, and urges caution about adopting simplistic solutions in the name of saving the public internet. Instead, the author suggests that there is a need t…
Grammar–The First Covert Operation of War
The cultural perturbations created by 11 September (9/11) have produced a layering of discourses. These layers offer a remarkable opportunity for interpreting ideology in relation to text construction. We examine two degrees of this textual dispersion: first, the motivated selection in the crafting of President Bush’s first speech after 9/11; and second, the speech by British Lieutenant Colonel Tim Collins as he exhorts his troops before engageme…
