Aspects of Planometrics
Some Problems of Pricing and Optimal Choice of Factor Proportions in a Dynamic Setting
In general econonmic theory we have a stock of logically well-founded conclusions about the role of prices as a means of achieving efficiency in the use of economic resources. Such conclusions are usually derived in a static setting. Trying to apply them in practice, practitioners in planning often encounter difficulties. They feel-in my opinion correctly-that in taking decisions about technology, factor proportions and so on, one has to take int…

A Multi-Sectoral Study of Economic Growth: Some Comments
(1) Mr. Zabel contends that there is a mathematical lapse in my analysis which obscures the economic meaning of the solution. His point is that I have one equation (No. 4 in his article), but neglected to eliminate a variable. The relationship in question says that the sumn of the expenditures on all items of private consumption equals total private consumption expenditure. This relationship, however, is used in deriving the set of demand functio…
Marxism and Mathematical Economics
A widely used quotation from J. Willard Gibbs says that "mathematics is a language." This quotation also appears on the title page of Professor Paul A. Samuelson's book Foundations of Economic Analysis, which is itself one of the cornerstones of mathematical economics in the United States. This characterization of mathematics, suitably interpreted, may contain a basic truth. In its most direct or naive interpretation, however, I think it implies …

Death rates, age distribution and average income in stationary populations
This paper investigates the influences of death rates on average income in stationary populations, through changes in the age distribution and changes in the upper age limit of the population taking part in production. It is assumed that decreases in death rates are followed by a decrease in the number of births to make the total population remain constant. This may reduce the loss in labour input due to the births. The formal analysis introduces…
