From reciprocity to competition
Korean has a reciprocal pronoun that under certain conditions takes on an innovative function as a marker of competition. This meaning emerges when the marker is used in reported speech containing a predicate expressing volition, intention, or speaker-orientation. In such contexts, the marker is reanalysed as co-referential with competing subsets of subject referents. The final stage is the extension of the competition marker to simple clauses an…
Korean converbs between coordination and subordination
One peculiarity of Korean morphosyntax is the existence of a large set of converbal suffixes. A survey of previous descriptions reveals a lack of consensus in the analysis of these converbs. Too often they have been pressed into a Eurocentric dichotomy of subordination versus coordination, leading to confusion about their typological status. Trying to correct this approach by describing the language on its own terms is therefore the main objectiv…

Questions on transitivity
This paper presents those areas of Iatmul morphosyntax that are relevant to a discussion of transitivity. Evidence for the syntactic status of subject and direct object as core arguments comes from S=O ambitransitive verbs, S/O pivots in complex predicates, switch reference, relative clause formation, agreement marking, and obligatory focus marking. In contrast, there is no evidence for the concept of an “indirect object”. Other relevant phenomen…

When Old Paradigms Die, New Paradigms are Born
All languages change all the time, and the changes concern different linguistic domains. The first half of the present article will focus on the verbal morphology of Basque, a language where synthetic and periphrastic verb forms co-exist. Diachronically, the periphrastic forms have replaced most of the synthetic forms. The comparison of northern and southern varieties leads to interesting conclusions. Apart from obvious lexical differences ,we ca…
The Struggle against Monolingualism
Speakers of regional and minority languages frequently have to choose among two or more languages,a choice that can be crucial to the future of the less powerful language. The monolingualism of the majority of Europeans is in many cases a result of a monolingual language policy. One challenge to this monolingual ideology is English, but the international role of English does not make regional languages superfluous, as these continue to have an imp…
