Gender-Segmented Labour Markets and Foreign Demand Shocks
Gender segmentation in labour markets shapes the local effects of international trade. We develop a theory that combines exports with gender-segmented labour markets and show that, in this framework, foreign demand shocks may either increase or decrease the female-to-male employment ratio. If a foreign demand shock happens in a female-intensive (male-intensive) sector, the model predicts that the female-to-male employment ratio should increase (d…

Heterogeneous trade agreements and adverse implications of restrictive rules of origin: Evidence from apparel trade
We revisit the heterogeneous effects of regional trade agreements (RTAs) using a PPML gravity model and comparing apparel and total trade. Apparel, as a politically sensitive sector, has specialised, unusually restrictive rules of origin (RoOs) clauses that vary considerably across RTAs. Our RTA estimates have a significantly higher variance for apparel trade than total trade. We also find that the sizes of the RTA estimates for apparel trade are…
The relationship between female labor force participation and violent conflicts in South Asia
This paper explores the link between the prevalence of violent conflicts and the extremely low female labor force participation rates observed in South Asian countries. The Labor Force Surveys from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, and Pakistan are merged with the Global Terrorism Database to estimate the effect of terrorist attacks on female labor supply. We exploit the geographical variation in exposure to violence to compare administrative units e…
Labour market adjustment to third‐party competition: Evidence from Mexico
China's exports reduce wages in importing countries, but few studies have looked at competition in third‐party markets. We examine labour market outcomes in Mexico's apparel and textile sectors associated with US apparel and textile imports from China. Using data on US imports in conjunction with quarterly Mexican labour force surveys, we show that US imports from China are associated with a reduction of employment in Mexico's apparel and textile…
Globalisation and the Gender Earnings Gap: Evidence from Sri Lanka and Cambodia
Using household and labour force surveys from Cambodia and Sri Lanka, we find large positive wage premiums and a closing of the male-female wage gap during the Multi-Fibre Arrangement (MFA) period, but smaller premiums and a widening wage gap after the end of the MFA. Our results suggest that apparel exports continued to benefit women in developing countries post-MFA but women – both in and out of the apparel industry – are susceptible to changes…
Lights On: How Transparency Increases Compliance in Cambodian Global Value Chains
This article evaluates the implementation of a transparency policy in garment factories in Cambodia through the Better Factories Cambodia program. Using a difference-in-difference approach that is often applied to control for endogeneity, the author finds that compliance improved following the implementation of the transparency policy. Compliance increased in a group of 21 critical compliance areas that represent fundamental worker rights relativ…

Necessary Luxuries: Books, Literature and the Culture of Consumption in Germany, 1770-1815
In recent decades, historians have examined the growth of a consumer society in the later eighteenth century; Consumption and the World of Goods, edited by John Brewer and Roy Porter (1993), is a landmark in this research, which is still generating varied work. Students of Germany, particularly Daniel Purdy and Karin Wurst, have noted that the culture of classical Weimar, despite the rearguard action mounted by Goethe and Schiller against the low…

Demonizing the Jews: Luther and the Protestant Church in Nazi Germany
Martin Luther’s writings against the Jews have embarrassed later generations, both by their substance and by their tone. Their initial argument is theological. Both in the Old Testament and in Luther’s time, Jews profess that they can lead a life pleasing to God without the help of divine grace. For their rejection of the Messiah, they have been punished with exile, and Christians should not persecute them but leave them in their misery as a drea…

The Religious Enlightenment: Protestants, Jews, and Catholics from London to Vienna
Under what may seem an oxymoronic title, David Sorkin develops and extends the argument, eloquently put forward by Jonathan Sheehan in The Enlightenment Bible (2005) and elsewhere, that the Enlightenment marked not the decline but the transformation of religion. Instead of assisting the process of secularization, as Peter Gay maintained a generation ago, the Enlightenment ‘was not only compatible with religious belief but conducive to it’ (p. 3).…
Der Dichter stand auf hoher Kuste: Gerhart Hauptmann im Dritten Reich
Although he enjoys little favour among present-day critics, Gerhart Hauptmann remains Germany's greatest twentieth-century playwright after Brecht. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1912, he was the most distinguished author to remain in Germany under the Third Reich. Hence his late career offers a case study in the Nazis’ cultural politics and in the impact of tyranny on an avowedly unpolitical writer. Hauptmann fits none of the increa…

Religion and the Enlightenment: A Review Essay
Recent studies of the Enlightenment suggest that its relation to religion is far more complex than a simple process of increasing secularization. The book by Sheehan shows, by examining translations of the Bible into English and German in the Enlightenment, how religion was reshaped, leading eventually to the dogma-free Christianity proposed by Matthew Arnold. Israel's book argues that alongside the relatively cautious mainstream Enlightenment th…

Does Border Enforcement Protect U.S. Workers from Illegal Immigration
In this paper, we examine the impact of enforcement of the U.S.-Mexico border on wages in U.S. and Mexican border regions. The U.S. Border Patrol polices U.S. boundaries, seeking to apprehend any undocumented entrants. It concentrates its efforts on the Mexican border. We examine labor markets in border areas of California, Texas, and Mexico. For each region, we have high-frequency data on wages and person-hours the U.S. Border Patrol spends poli…

The Politics of Nafta in Mexico
For much of the twentieth century, Third World economies that were based upon import-substitution industrialization (ISI) were dominated by authoritarian regimes. When economic liberalization began to overtake many of these countries, however, as happened in recent years, the question arose as to whether authoritarian rule had not become anachronistic in mediating the relations between state and economy in the Third World. The experience of Mexico…

The greenery of well-engineered factory complexes”: Fiji's garment-led export industrialization strategy
In February 1990 Navitilai Naisoro, the Sussex University-educated permanent secretary to the Fiji Ministry of Trade and Commerce, outlined to students at the University of the South Pacific in Suva his vision for Fiji's future. “My hope,” he said, “is that one day instead of seeing the greenery of sugar cane fields, we see the greenery of well-engineered factory complexes.” In 1990 he had every reason to believe that his dream was well on its wa…
