Liberation Sociology
Many people of all ages today continue to be attracted to sociology and other social sciences because of their promise to contribute to better political, social, and moral understandings of themselves and their social worlds-and often because they hope it will help them to build a better society. In a world of new movements and deepening economic inequality following the Great Recession, this new edition is vital. It features dozens of new exampl…
Why Whiteness Is Invisible
Look, a White! [by George Yancy] was written to share a way of looking at records, new ways of bringing attention to what has become the norm, business as usual. Yancy's objective is to "name whiteness, mark it," to share a critical view on it.... This book is a much needed, insightful look at the ideological construct of race. Since the invention of scientific racism in the French academy in the early nineteenth century, race has applied to ever…

Prolegomena for a Sociological Study of the Chinese Family in Indigenous Terms
We examine the Chinese family from an indigenous perspective. Starting from the meanings conveyed by the ideograms in the Chinese language, we analyze 4 different concepts into which the English term and sociological notion of family can be translated. Logistic regression analyses show that Black women are significantly more likely than White women to be in age-heterogamous marriages. Marital history appears to be the strongest predictor of age-discrepant marriages - remarried subjects exhibit…

Age Heterogamy in Marriage
This paper examines May-September and May-December marriages--that is marriages in which spouses are separated by unconventional age differences. These marriages are not interesting for their numbers; only about 8% of marriages are age-heterogamous. What makes them interesting is their potential for theorizing about homogamy and its social consequences. Using data from the US Panel of Income Dynamics and a major epidemiological study in Florida t…
