  • The Global Animal Advocacy Movement in International Relations: Toward an animal-inclusive IR

    Open Access•Sarah Tauber•ARTICLE•International Relations•2023•Cited by: 1

International Relations (IR) scholarship on Global Social Movements (GSMs) has helped usher in post-realist theories, such as constructivism and critical IR. Despite its innovativeness, extant GSM research is limited because it ignores the relevance of the Global Animal Advocacy Movement (GAAM), which seeks to end animal exploitation. The omission of GAAM is emblematic of IR's anthropocentric disregard of the relevance of animals in global politi…

  • Cross-National Measures of the Treatment of Animals

    Sarah Tauber•ARTICLE•Society and Animals•2022•References: 5

To conduct their work, Human-Animal Studies scholars, practitioners, and activists need to understand how different nations treat animals. Although extant cross-national measures of the treatment of animals are helpful, they are quantitatively unsophisticated, narrow in focus, and nontransparent. This paper offers a sounder methodology for measuring how nations treat animals. Using polychoric factor analysis of nine indicators that capture the tr…

  • The Impact of the Threat of Terrorism on U.S. District Court Decisions During Wartime

Sarah Tauber, Christopher P Banks et al.•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•2015•Cited by: 1

Federal courts are key actors in the U.S. government’s fight against terrorism because they adjudicate cases based on the USA PATRIOT Act, and accordingly make national security policy. We examine the extent that the terror threat influences judicial decisions in a dataset of 111 USA PATRIOT Act cases decided in the U.S. District Courts from 2001 through 2013, while controlling for other judicial decision-making variables. The results demonstrate…

  • State Legislators’ Roll-Call Votes on Farm Animal Protection Bills: The Agricultural Connection

    Sarah Tauber•ARTICLE•Society and Animals•2013•References: 18

Nonhuman animal studies scholars have extensively investigated attitudes on animal welfare in general and farm animal welfare in particular. Thus far, this research has focused mainly on public opinion, but there has been minimal research seeking to explain the influences on actual policymakers when they vote on farm animal welfare legislation. This paper contributes to this literature by quantitatively analyzing 216 state legislators’ votes on t…

  • The Influence of Animal Advocacy Groups in State Courts of Last Resort

    Sarah Tauber•ARTICLE•Society and Animals•2010•References: 18

Since the 1970s, animal advocacy groups have attempted to improve the treatment of non-human animals by influencing public opinion and lobbying for legislation that protects animals. Empirical assessments of these efforts have reported mixed results. Animal advocacy groups also use litigation as a means of improving the treatment of nonhuman animals, but there has been limited empirical testing of the effectiveness of animal advocacy litigation. …

  • Capital Punishment Decision Making on the Supreme Court of Florida

    Open Access•Sarah Tauber•ARTICLE•Politics & Policy•2002•References: 21

As they have done with research on the U.S. Supreme Court, judicial politics scholars have studied the influences on state supreme court justices' decision making. Although earlier state court decision‐making research focused on extra‐legal explanations, more recent studies have integrated both legal and extra‐legal variables into their models. However, most of the extant research on state court decision making employs a multi‐state design, which…

    Open Access•Sarah Tauber, Steven C Tauber•ARTICLE•Political Research Quarterly•1998•Cited by: 4•References: 30

There is a rich history of scholarship demonstrating that interest groups have influenced judicial policymaking, but there has not been a system atic test of whether a single group has contributed to case outcomes over an entire policy area while controlling for other elements of judicial deci sion making. Additionally, the degree to which extra-legal factors domi nate a group's ability to influence judicial policy has not been explored sufficien…
