What does the Visual Image of a Teacher Have to do with the Prestige of the Teaching Profession? Some Research Experience on this Issue in Latvia
Aim. Our study explores how 14-15-year-olds in Latvia perceive the visual image of the teacher, highlighting contribution of visual communication to the prestige of the teaching profession. Our research poses two questions: (RQ1) Which indicators of occupational prestige are attributable to teacher’s visual image? (RQ2) How do pupils evaluate a teacher’s image based on these indicators, and what does this reveal about their expectations for visua…

From National to Global? Research on the History of Education in the Baltic States (1990–2015)
This study explores the first twenty-five years after the restoration of independence, when historians of education in the Baltic States sought to free themselves from the constraints placed upon them by the Soviet dictatorship and join the global community of education historians. We examine the following questions: how modern did the History of Education in the Baltic States become during those twenty-five years? How closely do Baltic historian…

German fascism, Soviet communism, and Latvian nationalism in the education of Latvia (1940–1944)
This article focuses on the position of leading Latvian pedagogues in cooperation with Nazi occupiers and the paradoxical transformation of Latvian nationalism into resistance against fascism and communism. Latvian attitudes towards Nazism were formed during Soviet occupation in 1940 when Latvian society, especially the intelligentsia, suffered under severe Communist oppression. Upon occupation by the Nazis in July 1941, teachers expected to retu…

The school theatre as a place of cultural learning
The goal of this article is to reveal how through school theatre activities under authoritarian rule, changes took place in pupil knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviour regarding culture, namely, how the process of cultural learning occurs. I use a historical case study, specifically the case of the Valmiera School Theatre, which was the leading theatre group, not only in Soviet Latvia, but also in the entire Soviet Union. My primary sources…
Controlling the image of the teacher's body under authoritarianism
The ideal of the Soviet teacher can be revealed in Soviet mass media, but historians are challenged by the question "what was the actual reality"? Therefore, we addressed the reality of the Soviet school using two research questions: 1) What teacher image was cultivated by Soviet propaganda, and what did the average teacher actually look like? and 2) How did Soviet power try to counteract the "incorrect" image of the teacher? Our research is base…

The Visual Image of Teachers
"Debido a la interacción social en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje se ha formado una imagen del maestro en la mente de los estudiantes, que posteriormente se reproduce en el espacio público. Entendemos imagen como el fenómeno que se desarrolla en la conciencia humana como resultado de la experiencia social en forma de sistemas de signos. La investigación muestra que la imagen del maestro en el espacio público no siempre es positiva. En consec…
History of education and the struggle for intellectual liberation in post-Soviet Baltic space after the fall of the Berlin Wall
This study on a “new” history of education is written from the perspective of a participant in the process of discarding Soviet intellectual and physical boundaries. The fall of the Berlin Wall has, over the past two decades, become a continuous process in post-Soviet societies, when the now liberated historians of education were faced with a new challenge, namely integration into the newly opened world. The only allowed theory, Marxism-Leninism,…
