Bahir Dar and the lake Tana basin. History of an urbanshed: Interview with James McCann by Guillaume Blanc
James McCann provides here a template regarding Ethiopia's rural modernization in four distinct periods of demographic and spatial change that transformed the physical landscape of Lake Tana at Blue Nile river's headwaters and its effect on the region's hinterland on a local, national and international level that would form the "urbanscape" of the city of Bahir Dar in early twenty first century. Ecology and Environment
This chapter examines the ecological and environmental history of modern Africa. It explores the range of environmental challenges faced by Africa’s peoples over the past two centuries of imperialism and globalization and considers the extent to which these challenges were particular to the African continent. Maize and Grace: Africa's Encounter with a New World Crop, 1500-2000
Around 1500 A.D., an African farmer planted a maize seed imported from the New World. That act set in motion the remarkable saga of one of the world’s most influential crops. This compelling history offers insight into the profound influence of maize on African culture, health, technological innovation, and the future of the world’s food supply.

Maize and Grace: History, Corn, and Africa's New Landscapes, 1500-1999
The old man's complaint about maize as “European” food in Audrey Richards' now classic 1939 field study reflected his obvious disdain for the new food of the mines and cities of colonial Northern Rhodesia (Zambia). His perception of maize as “European” food was, however, anachronistic even in 1939, reflecting a landscape of memory rather than the creep of agrarian modernism and the maize-based diet of an urban wage-labor economy. In fact, by the …
Green land, brown land, black land: An environmental history of Africa, 1800-1990
James C. McCann provides a synthesis of evidence and a narrative of Africa's environmental history over the past two centuries. In a book readily accessible to undergraduates and nonspecialists, Professor McCann argues that far from being pristine and primordial spaces, Africa's landscapes were created by human activity. This argument contrasts strongly with the idealized notions of an African Eden commonly held in the West and in Africa itself. …
