Mediahistorian näkökulma tarpeen digitaalisten lehtiarkistojen käytössä
Tutkimusaineistojen massadigitointi on 2000-luvulla aiheuttanut tutkimuksellisen käänteen, joka tavalla tai toisella koskettaa kaikkia historiantutkijoita. Etenkin sanomalehtien lähdekäyttö on kasvanut eksponentiaalisesti, kun tutkijat pääsevät entistä helpommin aineistojen äärelle. Samanaikaisesti lähdetyypin erityispiirteet jäävät usein pohtimatta. Tässä katsauksessa avaan digihistoriaan liittyvän käsitteellisen tiedon merkitystä digitaalisten …
The 1975 Icelandic ‘Women’s day off’ in Nordic print media
In October 1975, the Icelandic women’s movement organized a ‘Women’s Day Off’ (WDO), a one-day strike designed to reveal the societal importance of women’s work. In this article, we explore media coverage of the WDO in the Nordic countries. Through an analytical lens that focuses on media framing and journalistic practices, we analyse differences in the coverage’s scope and content. We also contextualize the coverage against the background of soc…
Adopting Public Relations-Like Strategies to Promote Labour Feminism in Finland, 1965–1975
When public relations as a field professionalized in Finland in the 1960s, it had knock-on effects beyond the corporate world. As an example of this, I analyse various public relations-like strategies adopted by a party political women's organization, the Finnish Women's Democratic League. I show that as a radical left organization, the Finnish Women's Democratic League began to value media visibility in the mid-1960s, but it also continued to us…
Radical sex role ideology and the Finnish gender role movement in the late 1960s
An active discussion of gender roles and the need to renegotiate them took place in the late 1960s in Finland. While previous studies have associated this ‘sex role debate’ with the independent civic organisation Association 9, this article focuses on the wider gender role movement. The article analyses the interplay and differences among the Finnish Women’s Democratic League, the Committee for Women’s Status, and Association 9’s grassroots activ…
“I have always said that I am not a feminist, but…”
This article studies lived experiences of gender equality and feminism in Finnish newsrooms between 1960 and 1990. On one hand, the journalists I interviewed claimed they had reported on diverse social issues related to gender equality and feminism throughout their careers. On the other hand, they embraced the idea that the journalistic profession had achieved more gender equality in Finland than in other countries in the Global North and the Nor…
International or Transnational? Continuities or Ruptures? Introduction to the Special Issue on Nordic Women and the Transnational Networks during the Cold War

Women's non-unionised activism in Swedish newsrooms, 1961-89
In this article, the trade union newspaper Journalisten is used to analyse the development of women's non-unionised activism in Swedish newsrooms between 1961 and 1989. By adopting a social movement approach to workplace activism, it is shown that the heyday of women journalists’ collective action was in the 1970s. However, individual journalists before and after played a central role in campaigning for change in gendered work cultures, creating …
Union Discussions of Gender Equality in the Swedish Trade Union Newspaper Journalisten , 1961–1989
Sweden is arguably one of the most gender-equal countries in the world, and the historical development of that equality has been studied in detail. However, less is known about how the idea of gender equality was adopted in different professional spheres. In this article, I focus on this topic by using one profession, journalism, to analyse how gender equality was placed on the trade union agenda and negotiated in Sweden between 1961 and 1989. Dr…
