Jahrhun…
Till Death Do Us Part
The so-called Kulturkampf, the conflict between the German Reich and the Catholic Church in the 1870s and 1880s, is one of the most important ideological conflicts of the late nineteenth century and reveals a political theological dynamic characteristic of the modern (German) nation state. This paper analyzes the paradoxes of this conflict along the lines with Eric Santner's analysis of political representations. During the Kulturkampf, Catholic …
The Journalist as Producer
Since the eighteenth century, literary authors have been dependent on journalism while also contributing to this field; these mutual links become particularly pronounced in the Weimar Republic, when many writers turn to journalistic writing to supplement their income and enhance their public profile. This essay sets out the vibrancy of the Weimar journalistic landscape, where the feuilleton, or review section, shaped public debate and where liter…

Die Predigt als symbolische Form
Historicism, Religionsgeschichte , and the Rhetoric of Eschatology
The article discusses the central role of the history of religion in the debate on the so-called “crisis of historicism” during the first half of the twentieth century. I argue that the seemingly marginal question of how to write the history of religion informs major debates about the writing of history and history's place in culture. Focusing on Ernst Troeltsch's On Historical and Dogmatical Method in Theology (1900) and Rudolf Bultmann's Histor…
Self-deception and the dark side of history
Gershom Scholem was always skeptical about the promises of Enlightenment, which did not necessarily accompany the emancipation of the Jews and all too often implied the negation of their collective identity. To counter the myth of Enlightenment that drove Jewish assimilation, he developed a counter-narrative that can be conceived of as a critical mythology. To do so, he refered to Counter-Enlightenment thinkers as different as the cultural critic…
Prophetic Criticism and the Rhetoric of Temporality
The paper discusses Paul Tillich’s changing conception of a “prophetic critique” of contemporary culture and society through the notion of a “kairos”, the moment of fullfilled time. It shows how Tillich refers both to a specific notion of prophecy (developed in Max Weber’s reflections on charisma) and to a concept of eschatological time (developed in Karl Barth’s dialectical theology). In different texts from the 1920ies and the 1950ies, Tillich …
The History of Dogma and the Story of Modernity
This paper explores how Blumenberg narrates the history of modernity as a second overcoming of Gnosticism. This detour through late antiquity illuminates the full meaning of his idea of modernity. Blumenberg develops important methodological insights about historical change, the threshold between epochs, etc. that appear in The Legitimacy of the Modern Age. We see the central role of the interpretation of Gnosticism but also of New Testament esch…

The Political Theology of Critical Philosophy
The Political Theology of Critical Philosophy:Reading Kant’s Ideas of Religion Daniel Weidner Kant’s work is epochal for the modern understanding of religion just as it is defining for the contemporary relation between theology and philosophy. At first glance, Kant’s critique of metaphysics, and more precisely his treatment of the concepts of God, infinity, and immortality, appears to neatly separate two areas that had hitherto been intertwined. …
Das Leben vom Tode her
Es Ward Mein Herz Zur Eisenbahn’
Ludwig Tieck's last Novellen mark the threshold between romantic and realistic literature. Focusing on Waldeinsamkeit , the essay analyses how motifs and narrative strategies of the Romantic Kunstmärchen are reformulated, pointing towards a new form of novellistic narration that hovers ambivalently between Romanticisation and disillusionment. This transformation reacts both to the experience of modernisation and to the new status of literature fo…
The Rhetoric of Secularization
The ambiguous idea of secularization still underlies most genealogies of modernity. It denotes both a general decline in the importance of religion in society and, more specifically, the transformation of religious ideas and practices into political or economic behavior. This ambivalence can be understood as rhetorical, since it is informed by a series of metaphors and figures that make up the complex fabric of these discourses. A close reading o…
“If to Fall, for Laws, Religion, Liberty, We Fall”
At the end of 1745, at the recommendation of the Prince of Wales, George Frideric Handel contacted Thomas Morell (1703-1846) to request a libretto. The ordering catchwords of the oratorio nation, law, and liberty themselves emerge from this simultaneously outwardly and inwardly directed patriotism. In that tradition, tlawt meant identity-constituting religious law but also the constitution, guaranteeing precisely the unity of nation and religion.…

Thinking beyond Secularization
Walter Benjamin has always been both a fascination and an obstacle for intellectual history. He seems to relate to nearly every discourse of early-twentieth-century German history, but in a peculiar, even idiosyncratic, way that makes it difficult to circumscribe his own position. Benjamin's fragment Capitalism as Religion, written in 1921, takes up certain discourses and transforms them by his own writing. Its inconsistencies (or “ungrammaticali…
Kant's relation to religion and theology is complex since he tries both to delimit theology's influence and to inherit its discursive power. The essay explores the different critical strategies and rhetorical means that Kant uses to deal with theology: theological analogies and metaphors in his systematic thought, a new kind of ,philosophy of religion,' a political theology of civil society, and finally a specific way of reading the Bible
