  • Divergent Amplification and Social Behavior: Some Methodological Considerations

    Open Access•Ivan D London, Warren Thorngate•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1981

Many social psychological phenomena exhibit convergent amplification, i.e., homeostatic or error-cancelling tendencies, the results of which can be studied by currently popular research and statistical methods. We argue, however, that at least as many social psychological phenomena exhibit divergent amplification, i.e., heteromorphic or catalytic tendencies, the results of which cannot be studied by currently popular methods. The latter phenomena…

  • Convergent and Divergent Amplification and its Meaning for Social Science

    Open Access•Ivan D London•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1977

Social science is viewed as requiring a paradigm fundamentally different from that currently in use which reflects essentially the habits of classical physics. Its basic characteristic is the prevalence of minor and major events which amplify sequentially in such a way as to converge toward or diverge from expected outcomes. Other distinguishing characteristics of social science are discussed in the context of amplification and include the histor…

  • Socio/Psycholinguistics of the Cultural Revolution: An Empirical Study

    Open Access•Ivan D London, Ta-Ling Lee•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1977

Sample analyses are provided to show how political terms in vogue during China's Cultural Revolution developed colloquial meanings at variance with the official “dictionary.” Responses to these terms of subjects, most of whom were at that time in Kwangtung and Fukien Provinces, constitute the empirical data. A methodology with anthropological overtones is developed to meet the exigencies of handling such data

  • Rumor as a Footnote to Chinese National Character

    Open Access•Ivan D London, Miriam London et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1975

A case study of an odd rumor, widely current in China after Nixon's visit, is detailed. Based on interviews of respondents from Kwangrung and Fukien Provinces, an examination of the stabler aspects of this rumor not only points to its probable source, but also reveals two traditional components of Chinese national character

  • Interviewing in Sinology: Observations on Methods and Fundamental Concepts

    Open Access•Ivan D London•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1975

Observations, experientially and analytically based, are offered to maximize the contribution that the interview, as a research instrument, can make to sinology. Four major aspects of the interview as communication-in-depth are discussed: the linguistic, perceptual, attitudinal, and assumptive

  • The Revenge of Heaven: A Brief Methodological Account

    Open Access•Ivan D London•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1974

A chronological account is provided of the psychopolitical research that led to The Revenge of Heaven , an idiographic study of China's Cultural Revolution, including the problems encountered and their resolution. The underlying methodological rationale is explicitly discussed—one which explores the use of literary techniques and conceptions in psychological reportage as a way of reconstituting perceived reality from the data

  • Further Documentation on De-Stalinization in Soviet Physiology and Related Disciplines

    Open Access•Ivan D London•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1963

The rehabilitation of L. A. Orbeli, to whom was entrusted the exploitation of the [scientific] heritage, bequeathed by I. P. Pavlov at the latter's death in 1936, provides an example of the historical unwriting that is taking place in Soviet physiology and psychology as a consequence of de-Stalinization in the Soviet Union. Orbeli originally came under fire in 1948 for his supposed pro-Morganism in genetics, to which Lysenko was in violent opposi…

  • Soviet Reaction to the Downgrading of Stalin and Some Suggestions for American Broadcasts to the Soviet Union

    Open Access•Ivan D London, Miriam London et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1956

For those who view history as a resultant of ever-changing parallelograms of impersonal forces, the official downgrading of Stalin looms as an incomprehensible whose understanding in terms of these forces awaits retrospective clarification in the future. For those, however, who view current history as the history of men striving among men in a welter of common and cross purposes within the matrix of this century, the meaning of Stalin's descent f…
