Where Do We Go From Here
To read a paper of Professor Penelhum's is usually to learn more about carefulness and truth. In the first part of this reply I try to meet his challenge on a matter where we clearly seem to disagree. In the second part I attempt to show that religious believers need not be so very worried about such a challenge, and that this conclusion affects materialists far more than Penelhum. In the third part I clarify where my haste i n expression clouded…
Renascent Rationalism – Research and Speculation
The philosophers of Canada will long remain indebted to Helier Robinson. In 1969–70 he founded the Canadian Association for Publishing in Philosophy from his Ontarian base at the University of Guelph. Under the aegis of his Association arose the Canadian Journal of Philosophy , edited by the three Universities of Alberta; then a Canadian Monograph Series first administered by David Braybrooke at Dalhousie, and now by R.B. de Sousa at Toronto; mor…
Philosophical Nationalism
Ladies and Gentlemen, your kindness over many years has left me feeling deeply grateful, but really embarrassed as I tried to prepare a speech for this occasion. Now I also understand better why non-legal people feel awkward in attempting to compose a Will. Nevertheless, it is curiously sweet for me to be giving this Presidential Address of 1978 in London , Ontario. The context balances and almost cancels out a sour occasion about a decade ago in…
Pronouns, Primacy and Falsification in Linguistics
Language, truth and unobliging logic
Two Dogmas of Linguistic Empiricism
The first person singular is the nucleus on which all the other referential devices depend... The final point of reference, by which a statement is attached to reality, is the speaker's reference to himself, as one thing and one person among others... The world is always open to conceptual re-arrangement. But the re-arrangement is only the addition of new tiers of discrimination to a foundation that remains constant: the recognition of persisting…
Faith—and Faith in Hypotheses
Debate continues to rage among philosophers of religion over Anthony Flew's famous little paper ‘Theology and Falsification’ and the responses it provoked, most notably R. M. Hare's response that religious claims are in no way like scientific hypotheses. For now, twenty years later, we still find many theists taking a similar tack to Hare's. A particularly interesting example is J. F. Miller in Religious Studies , 1969, who replies to Flew that p…

Truth Preference and Neuter Propositions
Tarski's equivalence, as he allows, applies only roughly to assertions in ordinary language. Some of the relevant exceptions are of merely grammatical importance but others leave scope for interesting metaphysical pronouncements on science, mathematics and other fields of assertion. To understand these latter exceptions is to gain insight into Baylis’ and Lukasiewicz’ views on the question “Are some Propositions neither True nor False?” ( this jo…
