    Open Access•Robert I Watson•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of the…•1979

Social psychology supplies an array of concepts that may be used in the study of the history of psychology. The point of departure for discussion is attitudes conceived as acquired behavioral dispositions which are related to an approach previously used in historical study, so-called prescriptive attitudes. Prescriptions as they relate to personality, role, self, development, values, and motivation in interaction with group behavior are then exam…

    Robert I Watson•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•1960•Cited by: 13

IN the United States psychology is provincial, both geographically and temporally. While almost any European psychologist whom we meet surprises us by his knowledge of our work, we fall far short of equivalent familiarity with psychological activities in his country. Our relative ignorance of current psychological activities outside the United States is so well known and seemingly so complacently accepted as hardly to need exposition. It is not m…

  • A brief history of clinical psychology

    Robert I Watson•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1953•Cited by: 12

Clinical psychologists have been surprisingly a historical. Very little thought has been given to, and less written about, the origin and development of clinical psychology. To capture in full measure the sweep and continuity of the history of clinical psychology is beyond the competence of the reviewer, to say nothing of space limitations. The psychometric tradition, one of the headwaters from which clinical psychology sprang, was, in turn, a pa…
