Introduction to the Special Issue on Art and Morality and Précis of the Four Books Included in the Symposium
The relation between art and morality is one of the vexed issues of aesthetics; it has a history at least from Plato and has been written about, or commented on, by most if not all the luminaries in aesthetics—it is not coincidence that one of the most influential papers on these debates is also one of the most cited papers of this journal. Also, the (im)pertinence of moral concerns for the assessment of artworks is arguably one of the most discu…
Philosophy of Painting
What can philosophy reveal about painting and how might it deepen our understanding of this enduring art form? Philosophy of Painting investigates the complex relationship between the painted surface and the depicted subject, opening up current debates to address questions concerning the historicality of art. Embracing contemporary painting, it examines topics such as the post-medium condition and the digital divide, and the work of artists such …

Things
The great nineteenth century architect and renovator of ancient buildings, Viollet-le-Duc, maintained that the adoption of absolute principles, when thinking about the past and restoring those things handed down to us from the past, ‘could quickly lead to the absurd’ (Viollet-le-Duc 1854: loc. 6796). From the simple fact that some things that are important to us are so, at least in part, because they are old, many questions spring. Why should the…

R ecent P hilosophical W ork on the C onnection between M usic and the E motions
This study asserts that philosophical interest in the connection between music and the emotions lies in the light it could throw on the nature of expression. Expression in turn is interesting because of the light it could throw on the nature of understanding and of value. Three different sorts of theory are considered: those that rely on experienced resemblance, those that rely on some imaginative state and those that rely on an aroused feeling. …
Aesthetic Essays - Malcolm Budd
The field of aesthetics is flourishing, particularly in Britain. Much work is being done on concepts that are not unique to aesthetics, such as representation and ontology, and on particular issues that arise from the arts, such as the nature of fiction and the status of photography. There is a tangle of problems which lie in the dark heart of aesthetics and centre on a problem dear to Kant and Hume: if a judgement has as its basis the pleasure f…
Aesthetic Creation - Nick Zangwill
The subject called ‘aesthetics’, as studied at universities, tends to fall into two parts. The first concerns problems which revolve around beauty and the perception of beautiful objects. The second concerns problems which arise from the contemplation of, and criticism of, the arts. The recent tendency (both in the practice of avant garde art and in the theory of art) has been for these two to come apart: Duchamp produced art without concern for …
True to Our Feelings
Robert Solomon died on 2 January 2007, aged almost 65. Ronald de Sousa's obituary captures the essence of the man, and can be found at http://www.aesthetics-online.org/memorials/solomon.html. This book was his last, and thus reflects his final thoughts on a topic on which he had published much over his academic life. The emotions are a popular topic in philosophy these days. After an extended period of dominance by approaches that highlight the c…

Institutional Definitions and Reasons
The paper examines certain aspects of institutionalist definitions of art, in particular whether they are committed to ‘indexing’, whereby calling something art makes it art. It is argued that there is no such commitment and that institutionalist definitions need not abandon the idea that works of art become art for specific, and substantial, reasons. The question is how reasons can be accommodated. A proposal from defenders of ‘cluster theories’…
Musical Expressiveness
This article assesses the current state of the philosophical debate regarding the expression of emotion in music, or expressive properties of music. It defines the question, explores a few false-starts and then considers the solution that expressive properties are a matter of a certain 'way of appearing' of the music. This solution is associated with Stephen Davies and Jerrold Levinson, whose work is discussed. It is argued that work in this area…

The Aesthetic Experience
This paper joins recent attempts to defend a notion of aesthetic experience. It argues that phenomenological facts and facts about aesthetic value support the Kantian notion that aesthetic experience lies between, but differs from, pleasures of the agreeable and pleasures stemming from cognitions. It then shows that accounts by Beardsley, Levinson, and Savile fail to resolve clear tensions that surface in attempting to characterize such an experi…
