Rumor and Wartime Migration
Nazi-instigated cases of forced displacement, flight, and deportation have received considerable historiographical attention. Much of this literature, however, has restricted itself either to an investigation of Nazi Germany’s policies of ethnic cleansing, “Germanization,” and the Holocaust “from above,” or to individual experiences of wartime displacement “from below.” This article draws on the history of communication to interrogate the dynamic…
From Hitler’s Disciple to Wartime Refugee
Building on recent investigations into children as historical actors, this article examines the experiences of ethnic German (Donauschwaben) expellees from northern Yugoslavia’s Vojvodina region. Using original oral history interviews, the article embeds these individuals’ childhood experiences of World War ii and expulsion into their greater life stories, thereby highlighting children’s multifaceted wartime roles and opportunities for agency. Forging Germans
Forging Germans explores the nationalization and eventual National Socialist mobilization of ethnic German children and youth in interwar and World War II Yugoslavia, particularly in two of its multiethnic, post-Habsburg borderlands: the Western Banat and the Batschka. Drawing upon original oral history interviews, untapped archival materials from Germany, Hungary, and Serbia, and historical press sources, the book uncovers the multifarious ways …

The Holocaust in the Borderlands
The 1944 Crvenka massacre and the potentials of postwar testimony
Examining various unexplored testimony collections, this article offers a first integrated analysis of the forced march and murder of hundreds of forced laborers from Bor, Serbia, in the multiethnic town of Crvenka, Batschka. Drawing on postwar Yugoslav and West German interrogation transcripts and 1990s oral history testimonies, it compares the different forms, functions, and conceptualizations of testimony during the postwar period. As it argue…
The Holocaust in Eastern Europe
As we move ever further from the events of the Holocaust—as witnesses die, memories fade and investigative files close—it is becoming painfully obvious that all has not been uncovered, studied and said about this horrific chapter in human history. On the contrary: in an era now marked by a resurgence of nationalism, antisemitism and political extremism, critical studies of the Holocaust in some countries have become the explicit targets of censor…
Reverberations of Nazi violence in Germany and beyond
The dark side of nation-states
Since the 1990s, historians have shown an increasing interest in the ethnic cleansings that wreaked havoc across the European continent for much of the twentieth century. Philipp Ther, in The Dark
Substitute for Power
