  • The economic costs of cadmium non‐tariff measures for smallholder cocoa farmers in Ecuador

    Open Access•José Luis Vázquez‐deCastro, Eduardo Chávez et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2024

While there is a growing number of studies on the export‐ and firm‐level implications of non‐tariff measures for developing countries, there is little evidence on the trickle‐down effects on the farm level. In this paper, we analyse the recent regulations of the European Union regarding the maximum allowed cadmium (Cd) contents for cocoa‐derived products. We assess the potential economic costs associated with these Cd regulations for smallholder …

  • Beyond the sum

Open Access•Elliot Van Maldegem, Florian Lauryssen et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2024•Cited by: 1

This study presents a multiproxy palaeodemographic perspective by combining radiocarbon dates with counts of archaeological site phases in the western Scheldt basin, spanning from the beginning of the Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age. The results were assessed critically, accounting for differences in research methodology, soil conditions and changes in building traditions. The results indicate a dynamic region characterized by almost continual …

  • Population collapse or human resilience in response to the 9.3 and 8.2 ka cooling events

Open Access•Elliot Van Maldegem, Hans Vandendriessche et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 20

This paper explores the impact of environmental, e.g. sea level rise, and climatic events, e.g. abrupt cooling events, on Mesolithic populations (ca. 11,350 to 6600 cal BP) living in the western Scheldt basin of Belgium and Northern France. The Mesolithic in this study-area has been extensively studied during the last few decades, leading to an extensive database of radiocarbon dates (n = 418), sites (n = 157) and excavated loci (n = 145). A mult…

  • Sustainability of artisanal mining of cobalt in DR Congo

Open Access•Célestin Banza Lubaba Nkulu, Lidia Casas et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2018•Cited by: 14•References: 3

  • Failures in agricultural innovation due to poor understanding of farmers' predispositions

Onjaherilanto Razanakoto, Rolland Razafindraibe et al.•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2018•References: 8

Development projects in Madagascar have increased and evolved for half a century, yet they have failed to enhance farmers’ performances. Related literature attributes the causes of failure as external to the project instigators, who are mostly institutions and funders. This article aims to highlight the role of development agents and their responsibility in unsuccessful projects. Participant observation of participatory learning and action resear…
