The artificial lighting equipment from late antiquity are known not only from archaeological findings, but also thanks to the numerous depictions in mosaics, paintings, bas-reliefs, etc. It is thanks to these representations that it is often possible to understand and interpret the use and function of these lighting devices which sometimes went beyond the mere practical purpose
