The Foundation of ‘Saint Véran–paul Felenbok’ Astronomical Observatory (1974)
This paper is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Paul Felenbok who was an astronomer at Paris-Meudon Observatory, and in 1974 founded a high-altitude observing station (2930 m), above Saint Véran village in the southern Alps (Queyras region of France). It was initially devoted to the study of the solar corona. After previous eclipses (1970, 1973) observed with the Lallemand electronic camera, the main goal was to investigate with this detector the st…
Lucien and Marguerite D’azambuja, Explorers of Solar Activity (1899–1959)
Jules Janssen, the Birth of Solar Physics, the Foundation of Meudon Observatory, and the Mont Blanc Adventure (1875-1895)
Jules Janssen is a well known astronomer. In 1868 he introduced the spectroscopic technique to observe solar prominences. He also invented innovative methods in imagery and photography. This paper focuses on the period from the foundation of Meudon Observatory, associated with the birth of astrophysics and solar physics in France, to the Mont Blanc saga, with the creation of the observatory and the three scientific ascents by Janssen to the top o…
Five Decades of Solar Research at the Pic Du Midi Turret-Dome (1960-2010). Part 1
The Pic du Midi Turret-Dome, known as 'Lunette Jean Rösch'or LJR ('lunette' for refractor in French), was scientifically active during five decades between 1960 and 2010. It was dedicated to high spatial resolution observations in solar astronomy. We review fifty years of advances in solar instrumentation and solar physics made by this instrument in various domains, which took advantage of the good seeing at Pic du Midi. First, we summarize some …
