Gladys and Margaret Dysart, a Silhouette
In this research note, I use portraiture methodology to explore the unsung environmental activism of Gladys Dysart McGaughy and Margaret Dysart in rural Appalachia during the early 1960s. Their story, centered on Dysart Woods, in Belmont County, Ohio, is being reconstructed through archival materials available thanks to three generations of community stewardship. This research note outlines the emerging portrait, drawing from three primary archiv…
Rural views on community and the inclusion of students with disabilities
This study addressed the use of inclusive educational practices in two districts nominated by scholars of inclusive education across the USA. The two districts that eventually agreed to be studied were located in rural places. This article analyzes and interprets study data to address the local features related to inclusive educational practice in these places in order to derive insights that might benefit districts elsewhere, including in both r…

There, it has become commonplace for public schools to lease oil and gas rights; to factor revenue from ad valorem taxes, indust…

Three Contemporary Dilemmas for Rural Superintendents
The school district is the fundamental administrative unit of schooling in the United States and the superintendent the lead official. The nature and the challenges of this position, however, vary across the landscape. Because most superintendents lead rural districts, the challenges facing those districts are the ones that typically bedevil the superintendency overall (perhaps a surprising thought to many readers). From this vantage, we theorize…
