  • Margaret Cavendish, William Newcastle, and Political Marginalization

    Lisa T Sarasohn•ARTICLE•English Studies•2011•References: 2

In 1668, Margaret Cavendish introduced her Plays, Never Before Printed with a refrain common in her works: “It is most certain, That those who perform Publick Actions, expose themselves to Publick censures.” She had learned this lesson, not only from the ridicule and incredulity her own works provoked, but also because of her husband's experiences during the Civil War and Restoration. William Newcastle, she writes in her biography of the Duke, “h…

    Lisa T Sarasohn•ARTICLE•Isis•1999•Cited by: 1

This study shows how patronage framed and fashioned the careers of Thomas Hobbes and his patron William Cavendish, the earl of Newcastle. When Hobbes offered his ideas on optics, motion, politics, and philosoph…

The Ethical and Political Philosophy of Pierre Gassendi L. T. SARASOHN THE EnRLV seventeenth-century French philosopher and cleric Pierre Gassendi has been largely forgotten in modern times, except perhaps as a footnote to Descartes's Meditationes. 1 Yet, in his own time Gassendi was regarded as the intellectual peer of Descartes, and he represented a fundamental difference in philosophic orientation.
