    Open Access•Hugh Martin, Hugh J Martin•ARTICLE•Revue LISA / LISA e-journal•2022

Service Bright with light, the flag ripples on the Jumbotron as they ask those who’ve served to stand. Stand to be honored. Stand for us to show our appreciation. Please, stand. Come on, stand, my friend Sal says. So I stand with other men who stand in ball caps & button-up jerseys in the many sections & rows. Some fans, holding plastic trays of nachos & cardboard carriers with jumbo Cokes, move to their seats quickly, hunching, embarrassed, not …

  • Iraq Good

    Open Access•Hugh Martin, Hugh J Martin•ARTICLE•Revue LISA / LISA e-journal•2022

Iraq Good The small boy smiles, kicks roundhouses across the potholed road, says, Van Damme good? & I say, Yes, Van Damme good. The boy punches the warm air while we, on the street for hours, outside the Sadiyah police compound walled with Hescos higher than our gunners’ heads, pace circles around the trucks. Two other boys, maybe nine or ten, chop each other, gently, with knife-hands, & one turns, says, No good Saddam, Saddam very no, & he point…

  • In Country

    Open Access•Hugh Martin, Hugh J Martin•ARTICLE•Revue LISA / LISA e-journal•2022

In Country Sad mothers gaze at the flagpole which is wetted by the sun. Stars forever. Stars at night.—Fadhil al-Azzawi we called it. Called it like my uncle called his months in Saigon. Slow addition of nights & days away from the States. Three-sixty-five and a wakeup, we’d say. The sand- box. The desert. Over there. Or just there. Where, missing my own mother, I pushed an Iraqi boy from a courtyard while his mother watched

  • Test Fire

    Open Access•Hugh Martin, Hugh J Martin•ARTICLE•Revue LISA / LISA e-journal•2022

Test Fire —south of Jalawla After we drive through the barren hills where the earth unrolls itself for miles, where the soil’s as stale as boxed cookies sent from the Youngstown USO, the gunners fire machineguns at the ridge wall’s face—small dust-explosions lift to the sky like faded desert larks while the rest of us shoot from our knees, our chests, as copper casings rain like loose change across the dirt, then as we convoy back to Cobra from n…

  • Frisking Two Men in Sadiyah

    Open Access•Hugh Martin, Hugh J Martin•ARTICLE•Revue LISA / LISA e-journal•2022

Frisking Two Men in Sadiyah Sergeant Kenson says to search these men since they’ve watched us by the road all morning. I go down to the dirt on one knee, begin at the ankle where the thin cloth of this man’s beige dishdasha grazes the skin. My palms and fingers climb like up a rope, push at the outline of leg. Marcin watches to the side with his rifle; mine’s slung over his back. This man, who could be sixty, doesn’t take his hazel eyes from my f…

  • Interdependence in Media Economics

Hugh J Martins, Hugh J Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mass Media Ethics•2009•Cited by: 6•References: 8

Citizens need accurate news to govern themselves effectively in a democratic society. Journalists argue editorial independence is necessary to ensure that the integrity of news is not compromised. However, the economic characteristics of news create conflicts between the ideal of independence and the need to pay production costs. This study analyzes those conflicts and the economic tools for resolving them. The analysis suggests ways to balance i…

  • An Industry in Transition

    Open Access•Hiromi Cho, Hugh J Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Journalism & Mass Communication…•2006•Cited by: 6

Contrary to the general impression of the daily newspaper industry as a dying industry, data from 1987 to 2003 showed an industry in transition. Although 305 newspapers ceased daily publication during this period, 64% of these newspapers continued to serve their markets as weeklies, merged dailies, or zoned editions. The 111 dailies that went out of business were offset by sixty-three dailies that started publication. In effect, the newspaper ind…
