Open Access•Tao Xin, Nikita Makarchev et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Public…•2025•References: 6

Citizen satisfaction with public services is an increasingly important governance concern. However, research on the sources of citizen satisfaction remains conceptually under‐developed. Moreover, there is an absence of clarity over expectations’ position in the satisfaction process. This paper, using the case of land administration in Vietnam, proceeds to improve the status quo. In particular, it introduces a more robust predictive model, based o…

  • One Step Forward, One Leap Back’

Open Access•Nikita Makarchev, Chunwen Xiao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2022•Cited by: 1

In recent years, the relationship between China’s Communist Party (CCP) and its state-owned enterprises (SOEs) has tightened. However, the impact this has had on SOE international subsidiaries remains unclear, especially vis-à-vis human resource management (HRM). This article examines recruitment and selection in Western subsidiaries of China’s largest SOEs: national oil companies (NOCs). It does so with particular attention to the experience of …

  • An ‘Incalculable Blunder’

    Nikita Makarchev•ARTICLE•The Journal of Imperial &…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 5

This paper examines Edwardian public schools’ relations with Empire. It does so by focusing on their students’ perceptions of the imperial enterprise and participation in Empire-relevant schemes. For, current scholarship has, almost without exception and in-depth investigation, presumed the Empire’s popularity and pre-eminence within such institutions. However, this paper, drawing on new archival research and Eton College source material, argues …

  • Cuckoos in the nest

    Nikita Makarchev, Piotr Wieprzowski•ARTICLE•Post-Soviet Affairs•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 37

Over recent years, Russia's government has been expanding its presence in domestic state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and instituting numerous regulatory revisions. However, research is inconclusive over the government's underlying economic intentions, and intervention outcomes, vis-à-vis SOEs. Likewise, it remains imprecise in relation to various characteristics of government–SOE interaction. To mitigate these issues, this paper develops a new state…

  • Better red than dead

    Open Access•Nikita Makarchev, Chelsea C Xiao•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Sociology•2021

This paper examines socialism in Edwardian public schools. It concentrates on understanding their students' responses to, and conceptions of, socialism's core tenets. For, existing scholarship has depicted these Edwardian institutions as almost uniformly conservative and proficient in inculcating students with pro-social hierarchy, anti-social innovation views. Any ideological tensions, then, stemmed from the interaction of popular, conservative-…

  • Neither Fair nor Efficient, but More Elitist

Yuan He, Nikita Makarchev•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2018

This paper examines the concept and practice of meritocracy in Chinese national oil corporations’ (NOCs) graduate recruitment and selection. It focuses on the post-2008 NOC reform period, which sees NOCs place increasing rhetorical emphasis on meritocratic or ‘fair’ recruitment and selection. However, this paper argues that, in practice, these sentiments remain unrealized. The NOCs continue to use some sub-optimum applicant assessment measures an…
