The First Synod of New York, 1745-1758 and its Permanent Effects
The first Synod of New York, formed two hundred years and a month ago, was the outcome of a religious revival, the Great Awakening, which on a great scale transformed and regenerated organized Christianity in the American colonies. The life of the Synod is a brilliant example of this transforming and regenerating work, so that its history is of much more than Presbyterian significance. Among its permanent effects was the stámping upon American Pr…

The Tercentenary of the Westminster Assembly
Coming to its three-hundredth anniversary, the Westminster Assembly encounters in the United States somewhat more congeniality than it has experienced in a considerable rather recent period. Were they aware of it, this might not greatly concern its members, for they did their work through good report and ill, in the strength of their own convictions. But the fact has significance. One reason for it is a change in the theological climate. After a …

Among the priceless benefits of the ecumenical Christian movement has been an increase of interest in the idea of the church. One result of this has been to throw into light the condition of the thought of American Protestantism on this subject, and thus to accentuate what has been observed, the considerable poverty of this thought. An illustration of this appeared not long ago in the work of an interdenominational commission formed to study "The…

The Plan of Union in New York
The history of the Plan of Union has been written largely under the influence of denominational zeal, jealousy, and antipathy. Underlying much of the writing have been the assumptions that a main object of religious endeavor is to build up denominational organizations and enlarge the statistics, that denominations ought to be kept "pure," that movements of individuals or churches from one to another are not altogether creditable and justify suspi…
Fundamentalism in the Presbyterian Church
This article gives a clear and concise account of the rise and development of the fundamentalist movement in the Presbyterian church. Beginning with the agitation aroused in the nineties by the charges of heresy brought against Professors Briggs, H. P. Smith, and McGiffert, the movement advanced from a concern for the infallibility of the Scriptures to the insistence on certain doctrines declared to be fundamental in Christianity. The actions of …
