Public Debt in a Federal State
This paper examines the dynamics of public debt in a fiscal federation, with a focus on Belgium from 1970 onwards. Lately, the institutions responsible for monitoring Belgium's fiscal situation have been issuing increasingly alarming alerts regarding the sustainability of the current budget deficits. We show that Belgium has experienced a cycle of high public debt and claim that the explanation for this phenomenon lies in the interplay between th…
Regional Inequalities in Nineteenth-Century Female Wages
Although recent studies on the geography of the female labor force have highlighted strong spatial variation in women's labor market participation, little is known about regional female wage inequalities in nineteenth-century industries. An analysis of female regional wage inequality for late-nineteenth-century Belgium, a country known for its early industrialization, finds a positive correlation between female industrial employment and wage leve…
The Causes of Growth during Belgium's Industrial Revolution
New estimates of gdp per province for the period from 1819 to 1896 show that the Industrial Revolution did not generate radical changes in the hierarchy of rich and poor provinces, but it increased the gap between the two sets dramatically. These findings suggest that the foundations of Belgium's economic geography were shaped during the ancien régime, not during the first half of the nineteenth century, as the traditional literature maintains. T…

Continuity and change in regional disparities in Belgium during the twentieth century
Exploring the food chain. Food production and food processing in Western Europe, 1850-1990
Until the late 19th century the food industry was restricted to a few activities, usually based on small scale industries. The links between agriculture and food processing were very tight. Due to increased purchasing power, population growth and urbanisation, the demand for food grew substantially. This was not only the case for basis products as corn and potatoes, but also and especially for more expensive, quality products as meat, fish and da…
Road Expansion and Market Integration in the Austrian Low Countries during the Second Half of the 18th Century
Comparing the Development of Economics during the Twentieth Century in Belgium and the Netherlands
This article discusses and compares the development of economics during the twentieth century in Belgium and the Netherlands. In Belgium the development of economics as a separate discipline started somewhat earlier than in the Netherlands. This was partly due to the workers' revolt of 1886 in the Walloon industrial areas. This event sent a shock wave through Belgian society that put an end to the country's traditional public policy of laissez-fa…
Struggling for Leadership
The present volume contains the proceedings of an international conference on the economic history of the seaports of Antwerp and Rotterdam (1870-2000). This venue was held at Antwerp on 10-11 May 2001 and was hosted by the Antwerp Port Authority. This international conference aimed at confronting the development of both ports. In the course of the last century and a half, economic growth in the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam has been staggering.…
Rent Control and Virtual Prices
After World War I rent control became a cornerstone of housing policy in many European countries, resulting in quantity constraints on the demand for housing. The theory on complete demand systems provides a framework for analyzing the effects of these policies on consumption. As a test case, a demand model is estimated to calculate virtual rent prices for interwar Belgium. The results are well in line with historical evidence, providing insight …
National accounts for the Low Countries, 1800–1990
During the 1980s research groups were formed in both Belgium and the Netherlands to analyse the long term economic development of these countries using reconstructed national accounts. This article presents an overview of the current state ofthe art. Moreover, in two case studies comparison is made of the economies of both countries. Employing new data a comparison oflabour productivity in agriculture is attempted while the factors determining th…
Private housing investment in Belgium between the wars
Little published material is available on patterns of housebuilding in Belgium. This paper provides a discussion of the Belgian housing boom of the 1930s and considers various explanations for it. It concludes that the relatively high level of residential building is associated with a favourable ratio of rents to construction costs and that government policy was significant in this
