    J F Bosher•ARTICLE•The Journal of Imperial &…•2005•Cited by: 1

Colonised by sea from the British Isles half a century before it became a part of Canada in 1871, Vancouver Island is best understood as part of a worldwide system of island bases that included Aden, Bombay, Cyprus, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Malta, St Helena, Sydney and Trincomalee (Ceylon). Its character was formed by the Royal Navy as it moved into the Pacific and by other imperial personnel attracted by reports of cheap land in a picturesque lands…

Reform, Revolution and French Global Policy, 1787–1791, by Jeremy J. Whiteman (Aldershot: Ashgate, 2003; pp. 269. £50). Analysing French foreign policy from Vergennes to Montmorin is difficult in the circumstances of those anxious years. The first hundred pages (Part I) of this interesting book review previous interpretations and explain the French government's diplomatic endeavours from the American War to the revolutionary events of 1789. • Gaullist Attack on Canada, 1967-1997

    J F Bosher•BOOK•Gaullist Attack on Canada,…•1998

What lay behind Charles de Gaulle's Vive le Quebec libre! speech in Montreal on 24 July 1967, Philippe Rossillon's activities in New Brunswick, Belgium, and Africa, and the sinking of Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior in New Zealand in 1985? J.F. Bosher argues that the motivation behind all these incidents was a policy of underhanded imperial ambition on the part of France. In The Gaullist Attack on Canada, he contends that French nationalists have be…

The vital link between New France and old France was the commercial one. The monarchy and the church depended on merchants to send ships with people, goods, and mail back and forth across the Atlantic. The colonies in New France were not self-sufficient: hardware, houseware, grain, flour and other foodstuffs (not to mention wine and brandy) had to be shipped over to Canada, Newfoundland, Acadia, and Louisbourg. Nearly all of the supplies that wer…

When the War of Austrian Succession came to an end in 1748 and the French and British paused briefly in their struggle for overseas empire, new men in France who had not been in trade before began to form companies and build ships to sail the Atlantic in search of profit. Shipping increased between France and its colonies: the North American colonies came in for a share of this business. Many ships on their way to or from the West Indies stopped …
