Recognition of Spoken Words
Until recently most models of word recognition have assumed that semantic effects come into play only after the identification of the word in question. What little evidence exists for early semantic effects in word recognition has relied primarily on priming manipulations using the lexical decision task, and has used visual stimulus presentation. Signs of Life beyond Earth
Previous proposals for communicating with extraterrestrials have relied heavily on pictorial messages, regardless of whether communication is via electromagnetic radiation or by spacecraftborne messages. Pictorial messages can be categorized according to whether the pictures can be shown directly or whether they must first be formatted. The author discusses the advantages of direct representations and critiques the universality of pictorial repre…
Transfer and retention of implicit and explicit learning
Two parallel tasks involving rule learning were used to assess implicit and explicit learning. The complex task (occurring in the complex rule‐line condition) involves predominantly implicit learning, and the simple task (occurring in the simple rule‐number condition) requires primarily explicit learning. Implicit learning clearly showed negative transfer from previous implicit learning experience, whereas explicit learning showed strong positive…
