Tracing Images, Shaping Narratives
80 years of Chilean rock art research, from its early descriptive stages in the 1940s to the present-day integration of relational ontologies, archaeometric techniques, and interdisciplinary perspectives, is reviewed. 562 publications are analysed, covering four major regions: the Arid North, Semi-Arid North, South-Central, and Southernmost Chile. Drawing from a systematically constructed corpus, we trace the evolution of research questions, theo…
Chinchorro fibre management in the Atacama Desert and its significance for understanding Andean textilization processes
Relational bodies
Funerary art has the body as its main material component, expresses responses to death and offers insight into relationships between the living and the dead. Chinchorro hunter-gatherer-fisher societies along the Atacama Desert coast provide a key example of such connections, having developed one of the world's oldest-known systems of post-mortem body transformation (c. 7000-3250 BP). A study of 162 modified Chinchorro bodies identifies diachronic…
Exploring rock paintings, engravings and geoglyphs of the Atacama Desert through materiality, style and agency
We characterise and discuss how different forms of rock art in the Atacama Desert (engravings, paintings and geoglyphs) have been studied, exploring how the concepts of materiality, style, and agency have become powerful analytical and heuristic tools to improve the understanding of the social phenomena behind its production, use, and consumption. The aim of this chapter is to make explicit and analyze how these notions underlie the theoretical a…
Consumption of animals beyond diet in the Atacama Desert, northern Chile (13,000-410BP)
The relations between humans and animals extend into socio-cultural aspects that go beyond the mere acquisition of food, meaning that animals constitute cultural resources that fulfill diverse roles in social and cultural systems. Visual images in different media, including rock art, represent one of the ways in which these complex relationships take place. While in the New World few comparative analyses of archaeofaunal and visual data have been…
