Due to its gradual Nazification on one hand and the impact of air raids in July and December 1944 on the other, the Deutsches Museum—the science and industry museum on the Isar River in Munich—was both physically and morally damaged by the end of the Third Reich. …

  • Does membership of the Royal Society affect careers? A trio in twentieth-century organic chemistry

Peter J T Morris, Peter Morris•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•2010

The issue of how the Royal Society has influenced science in the twentieth century is a complex one, and it is not easy to show its impact. It is even more difficult to demonstrate the effect of being a FRS on individual careers. This paper looks at three leading organic chemists in twentieth-century Britain who were connected academically—Perkin, Robinson and Todd. Did their relatively early Fellowships of the Royal Society deliver glittering ca…

  • Does the Science Museum, London, have Perkin's Original Mauve Dye? A Critical Reassessment of a Chemical Icon

    Peter J T Morris, Peter Morris•ARTICLE•History and Technology•2006

For many years the Science Museum has displayed Perkin's ‘original mauve dye’. The true historical significance of this specimen is considered in the context of the development of mauveine chemistry in the early 1860s and by comparison with similar specimens of the colorant in other museums. Because it is a crystalline sample of mauveine acetate, it cannot be earlier than 1862. This is also true of the other specimens, including one example with …

    Open Access•Anthony S Travis, Willem J Hornix et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 62

This is another paper about science and her powerful companion (technology), to use A. W. Hofmann's colourful phrase. Whereas most papers on the interaction of science and technology deal with the transfer of knowledge from academic science to industrial technology, this paper is about the contribution of an industrial researcher to academic chemistry. The boost Reppe's research gave to the study of aromaticity parallels the impact of the early s…

    Peter J T Morris, Peter Morris•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•1991

1122 Book Reviews TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE ransacked the technical literature. His research in archival materials is more limited. The National Archives records on the subject are extensive, particularly those of the Rubber Reserve Corporation during World War II. Many readers also would have appreciated some account of the federal government’s natural rubber program between 1941 and 1946 since it has direct relevance to the synthetic rubber progra…
