Reflections on Sikh Dharma at Fifty
Our panel on Sikh Dharma at Fifty, organized for the May 2023 Sikh studies conference at the University of California-Riverside, allowed me to update what I have previously written on 3HO/Sikh Dharma in light of recent developments affecting the organization. Here I reflect further upon (1) the internal evolution of Sikh Dharma and the self-identities of its followers, (2) the impact of Sikh Dharma – both the organization and its followers – on o…

From ‘overseas Sikhs’ to ‘the Sikh diaspora’ to ‘global Sikhs’: Retrospect and prospects in the study of Sikhs beyond the subcontinent
In this slightly revised version of my presentation of 4 September 2019 at the inaugural conference of The Centre for Sikh and Panjabi Studies at the University of Wolverhampton, U.K., I identify and begin to elaborate upon an historical sequence of five frames – ‘overseas Sikhs,’ Punjabi/Sikh ‘migrant communities,’ ‘the Sikh diaspora,’ ‘transnational’ Sikhs, and ‘global Sikhs’ – through which scholars have analyzed the lives of Sikhs living outs…

Ho/Sikh Dharma: Some issues for consideration
This paper reviews published literature on Yogi Bhajan/Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib Harbhajan Singh Yogiji and the main organizations that he founded in North America in the early 1970s – the Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization (3HO) and the Sikh Dharma Brotherhood (now, simply, Sikh Dharma or Sikh Dharma of the Western Hemisphere). I focus particularly on the way that Yogi Bhajan's and 3HO/Sikh Dharma's teachings, practices, and history intersect w…

Diasporic Imagings and the Conditions of Possibility: Sikhs and the State in Southeast Asia
The comparative experience of Sikhs in post-colonial Indonesia Singapore and Malaysia suggests that the state through its abilities to constrain global flows of people and images and to recognize and manage social difference within the polity remains a powerful force in mediating transnational processes and diasporic identities. The poetics and politics of recognition: Diasporan Sikhs in pluralist polities
In this article I explore the intersection of nationalist and multiculturalist discourses in the contemporary world. I contrast the experiences of Canadian Sikhs and Singaporean Sikhs to suggest ways in which the nationalist and multiculturalist projects of two pluralistic nation-states (Canada and Singapore) have affected local political fortunes of the Sikhs, a small but visible ethnocultural group with its own global nationalist aspirations. I…
