On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig operating in the Gulf of Mexico exploded (Figure 1). Eleven men working on the platform were killed and sixteen others were injured. This article is a case study of how natural gas pipelines have been treated under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). It examines three recent pipeline projects that involved determinations of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places.
