Understanding donors' motivations
The Effect of a School-Based Helper Program on Adolescent Self-Image, Attitudes, and Behavior
This study examined the effects of participation in a school-based helper program on adolescents' self-image, attitudes, and behaviors. Seventh-grade students at the junior high where the program was implemented were divided into 2 functional groups, one of which was required to engage in volunteer helping activities for the remainder of the school year, whereas the other group engaged in no such service. It was hypothesized that Helper Program p…
The Self-Image of Unrelated Bone Marrow Donors
This study investigated the self-image of individuals who donate bone marrow to strangers as part of the National Marrow Donor Program. Quantitative surveys were administered to donors before donating (N = 849), shortly after donating (N = 754), and a year after donating (N = 370). In addition, 52 donors were interviewed in-depth by telephone at the same three points in time. Many of these donors felt that by donating bone marrow they were actual…

African-American versus White Children and the Transition into Junior High School
This study aims to investigate differences between African-American (black) and white children as they make the transition from childhood to adolescence, from elementary to junior high school. Twelve K-6 schools from a midsize city were randomly drawn, and 512 children were followed from grades 6-7 for this analysis. Repeated measures analysis of variance is used on each of 71 dependent variables with race, gender, and grade in school as independ…
Presidential Address on Altruism and Sociology
This article concerns the study of altruism. Highlights of the research history of altruism in sociobiology, psychological social-psychology, and sociology are reviewed. Examples from the author's work on kidney and bone-marrow donation are interwoven with this history. The sociological mechanisms producing altruism, particularly normative obligation, are emphasized along with the psychological mechanisms (e.g., empathy). The need for better inte…

Entry into Early Adolescence
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of the movement into early adolescence upon the self-esteem of children. Which children are most vulnerable to this role-transition and what is the effect of changes in school environment, pubertal development, and social behavior'? With repeated survey interviews and nurses' measurements, 798 school children were followed from sixth into seventh grade in two different types of school systems. Fi…

Disturbance in the Self-Image at Adolescence
The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate whether adolescence is a period of disturbance for the child's self-image and, if so, at what age of adolescence and under what social conditions the disturbance is greatest. Several dimensions of the self-image were measured among 1,917 urban school children in grades three through twelve. Compared to children in the eight to eleven age group, the early adolescents, particularly those …

Functions of Children's Perceptions of the Stratification System
The purpose of this study has been to examine children's perceptions of the stratification system and to consider the possible consequences of these perceptions for the larger social order. There has been an attempt to extend one aspect of Davis and Moore's classical stratification theory by exploring the status attitudes requisite for an adequate number of children to strive toward prestigious, socially-important occupations. A sample of 1,917 b…

Self-Esteem and Achievement of Black and White Adolescents
This study measures the self-esteem and academic achievement of 798 black and white adolescents as they move from sixth to seventh grade in a large Midwestern city. Our findings, in many instances, do not fit widespread preconceptions, but support other recent, large-scale quantitative studies. The basic findings involving selfesteem are as follows: (1) black children appear to have higher, rather than lower, self-esteem than whites; (2) girls of…

Adolescent Perception of Sex-Roles in 1968 and 1975
Findings from a study of 798 sixth- and seventh-grade students in Milwaukee in 1974–75 were compared to those from a study of 470 Baltimore sixth- and seventh-grade children in 1968 to see if the new feminist ideology has had an effect on girls' self-esteem and attitudes toward their own sex. Results indicate few differences between the two studies. Girls in 1974–75 still demonstrated lower self-esteem and a less high evaluation of their sex-role…

The Family Member's Decision to be a Kidney Transplant Donor
Kidney transplantation as a medical innovation involves the entire extended family in a major decision. Will a relative donate a kidney to help save the life of a dying patient? It is the aim of this study to use the transplant experience as a research site to enhance our knowledge of how individuals in a family attempt to make a major and highly stressful decision. Over a 11⁄2 year period 124 families were followed through the transplant experie…
Organ-Transplantation
As a new medical technology, organ-transplantation has created unanticipated adjustment problems for the government, the general public, medical organization, and the patient and his family. This paper attempts to specify some of these problems with a focus on kidney transplantation. Several mechanisms seem to prevent suitable patients dying from kidney disease from being treated at a transplant or dialysis center. Lags in communication between l…
The Role Conflict of the First-Line Supervisor An Experimental Study
In a complex organization, the first-line supervisor is the focus of much role conflict. This study was an attempt to set up a simulated complex organization in order to study the resolution of this role conflict. The independent variables in this experiment were the role evaluations received by the supervisor from his organizational superiors and subordinates. As part of a general theory of role-conflict resolution, it was predicted that persons…

The Prospective Organ Transplant Donor
With increased sophistication of medical technology and the consequent expansion in the number of organ transplants, the complex of issues involving recipient, donor–related and unrelated–and physician becomes crucial. This discussion is based on preliminary findings of two studies being conducted at the University of Minnesota: (1) a review of 79 kidney transplant cases to examine stress on family when decisions of choosing a donor arise; (2) an…
