  • Spanish Reflexives

    Anthony G Lozano•ARTICLE•Hispania•1997

Pedagogical descriptions in high school textbooks cover certain reflexive constructions in the first and second levels. Textbook writers rarely present the full reflexive construction, e.g., Me contradije a mi mismo, displayed with all the grammatical persons and complete English glosses in its expanded form. These textbooks are silent on the differences between Spanish and English reflexives, including the permeability of English subject/object …

  • Graphic Sequences of Spanish Nominals and Reflexives

    Anthony G Lozano•ARTICLE•Hispania•1993

Graphics clarify ambiguities in sequences of nominals. The learners' difficulty in distinguishing among refexive, pseudo-reflexive, and no-refelxive patterns probably resides in not perceiving the nature of syntagmatic (linear) combinations versus paradigmatic (vertical) contrasts which occur concurrently. By focussing on paradigmatic and syntagmatic relationships via graphs of such pronouns, their interpretation as part of reflexive, pseudo-refl…

  • The Semantics of the Spanish Conditional in Discourse

    Anthony G Lozano•ARTICLE•Hispania•1988

The Spanish Conditional has not received the attention of other grammatical features in recent years. Yet it plays an important role in Spanish syntax and appears as a part of informal everyday as well as formal written and spoken discourse. It is much more complex than the grammaticalization of subsequence within a context of past tense, one of its major uses. Hadlich (1971) followed Stockwell et al. (1965) in describing the conditional as subse…

  • Subjunctives, Transformations and Features in Spanish

    Anthony G Lozano•ARTICLE•Hispania•1972

B Y POSITING TWO FEATURES, [+ optative] and [+ dubitative], we attempt to derive all subjunctives and imperatives in embedded and apparently simple clauses. Since these features are in clear contrast as to their patterning, they must be described separately. Of main interest to us is not that these features carry given semantic characteristics but that they have obvious syntactic consequences, i.e. obligate the subjunctive. Positing [+ optative] …
