  • Large mammal faunas and ecosystem dynamics during the late Middle to early Late Pleistocene at Grotta Romanelli (southern Italy)

    Open Access•Beniamino Mecozzi, Fabio Bona et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Advances•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 18

Since the beginning of the XIX century, Grotta Romanelli gained recognition in European stratigraphy as an important site for the Late Pleistocene, due to the attribution of its basal sediments to the Last Interglacial (MIS 5e). Its abundant archaeological and paleontological findings made the cave a key reference point for the study of human evolution and faunal dynamics in the larger Mediterranean area over approximately the last 130,000 years.…

  • Geoarchaeology of the Cornia river coastal plain (Piombino, southern Tuscany, Italy)

Open Access•Silvia Ravani, Davide Susini et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

This paper presents a 1:20,000 scale Geoarchaeological map of the Cornia river coastal plain in southern Tuscany. The Geoarchaeological map integrates a comprehensive dataset of geomorphological and archaeological features. The spatial relationships between landforms and archaeological records show that the settlement pattern from the VII century BC to the V century AD was mostly influenced by the presence of several depositional landforms which …

  • Psychological impact and health-related quality-of-life outcomes of Mayer–Rokitansky–Küster–Hauser syndrome

Open Access•Federica Facchin, Federica Francini et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2021

Mayer–Rokitansky–Küster–Hauser syndrome causes absence or underdevelopment of uterus and vagina, but women’s subjective experience remains understudied. This systematic review was conducted to examine the psychological and health-related quality-of-life outcomes of Mayer–Rokitansky–Küster–Hauser syndrome. In total, 22 articles identified through electronic search matched the inclusion criteria and were included in our review. Mayer–Rokitansky–Küs…

  • Shaping Mediterranean landscapes

Open Access•Mauro Paolo Buonincontri, Pierluigi Pieruccini et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•References: 37

Charcoal analysis, applied in sediment facies analysis of the Pecora river palaeochannel (Tyrrhenian southern Tuscany, Italy), detected the occurrence of past fire events in two different fluvial landforms at 800–450 BC and again at AD 650–1300. Taking place in a central Mediterranean district adequately studied through palaeoenvironmental and archaeological research, the investigation determined land changes, time phases and socio-economic drivi…

  • Grotta Reali, the first multilayered mousterian evidences in the Upper Volturno Basin (Rocchetta a Volturno, Molise, Italy)

  • The Transition from Hunting–Gathering to Food Production in the Gamo Highlands of Southern Ethiopia

    Open Access•James Arthur, Matthew C Curtis et al.•ARTICLE•African Archaeological Review•2019•Cited by: 11•References: 79

Over three field seasons between 2007 and 2012, we excavated three caves—Mota, Tuwatey, and Gulo—situated at an average elevation of 2,084 m above sea level in the cool and moist Boreda Gamo Highlands of southwestern Ethiopia. Anthropogenic deposits in these caves date from the Middle to Late Holocene (ca. 6000 to 100 BP) and provide excellent preservation of material culture, fauna, flora, and human skeletal remains from which to investigate cha…

  • Sedimentology, faunal content and pollen record of Middle Pleistocene palustrine and lagoonal sediments from the Peri-Adriatic basin, Abruzzi, eastern central Italy

Open Access•Pierluigi Pieruccini, Silvia Ravani et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

A 25 m-thick outcrop section exposed at Torre Mucchia, on the sea-cliff north of Ortona, eastern central Italy, comprises a rare Middle Pleistocene succession of shallow-water and paralic sediments along the western Adriatic Sea. An integrated study of the section, including facies and microfacies analyses, and characterization of paleobiological associations (mollusks, fishes, ostracods, foraminifers and pollen), enable a detailed reconstruction…

  • Major controls on architecture, sequence stratigraphy and paleosols of middle Pleistocene continental sediments ("Qc Unit"), eastern central Italy

Open Access•C Di Celma, Pierluigi Pieruccini et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

Middle Pleistocene continental sediments in central Italy ("Qc Unit") record the oldest fluvial accumulation along the uplifting margin of the Peri-Adriatic basin. The architecture of the sediment body can be divided into two unconformity-bounded, fining-upward cycles interpreted as genetically related depositional sequences. These sequences highlight the systematic adjustment of the fluvial system to changes in the ratio between accommodation sp…

  • A New Late Paleolithic “Offering Venus” from Frasassi Gorge (Central Italy)

Open Access•Mauro Coltorti, Cristina Lemorini et al.•ARTICLE•Palethnologie•2013

We present a new find coming from a cave in the Frasassi Gorge, (Marche, central Italy). The Venus was discovered by one of us (SP) at the base of a local man‐made scarp at the entrance of the cave. Although it was not found in situ, the simple stratigraphical setting of the nearby sequence and the fact that in the past there was an archaeological layer, later destroyed, allow us to establish that layer 3 is the best candidate for the provenience…

  • Geomorphological map and land units at 1

Open Access•Mauro Coltorti, Dario Firuzabadi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2011

Please click here to download the map associated with this article. Small scale geomorphological maps and land unit classification of large areas are not common due to the high degree of generalisation required to represent landforms originally mapped at larger scale (i.e. 1:10,000). Here we present a 1:200,000 scale geomorphological map of the Siena Province (Tuscany, Italy) where the landforms related to different processes have been synthesise…
