Ecocultural Theories of Development
Toward moving ‘race-acting’ research into a global perspective
This brief article lightly critiques the research of Burrell and colleagues that examines an innovative theory for understanding the low academic achievement scores of African-American adolescents compared to those of their White peers. It goes on to raise some hitherto muted emotive but attainable scholarly issues about cognitive repertoires and achievement dispositions of the Dark Continent – Africa – its race and Diaspora peoples. This special issue showcases research on the 90% of the world's adolescents growing up in the “majority world” (i.e., Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean). Articles were solicited that addressed three focal areas by (1) evaluating existing developmental models or proposing culturally based approaches to studying adolescent development; (2) describing successful models of interventions to improve the well‐being of youth; and (3) examinin…

Theories of Developmental Psychology for a Cultural Perspective
This paper examines the emergence of scientific psychology as a Euro-American product, which was later imported into Africa. It is argued that the current theorising in and the orientation of developmental psychology are essentially "Euro-centric" in nature and hence have limited applicability in the context of Africa. The role of culture in development is emphasised. An Afro-centric concept of child is examined and an attempt is made to demonstr…
Psychology in Sub-Saharan Africa
This paper assesses the present state of psychology in sub-Saharan Africa. In spite of enormous diversities, countries of this sub-region display considerable commonalities in the evolution of psychology into a professional discipline. It is a fledgling science at best, increasingly in the hands of Africans. Lack of recognition of psychology, insufficient finances, a small number of psychologists, embryonic infrastructure, lack of sensitivity to …
