Bias Cuts and Data Dumps
Introduction “Patterns are everywhere”, design researcher Anuradha Reddy told her virtual audience at the 2023 speaker series hosted by Brilliant Labs, a Canadian non-profit focussed on experiential digital learning and coding (Brilliant Labs / Labos Créatifs). Like other technology fora, this public-facing series offered designers an opportunity to highlight the accessibility of code. But unlike many such fora, Reddy’s code was worn on the body.…

The Bias Cut
This essay explores a material engagement with discourses of bias. At a time when the developers of algorithmic systems are exploring concepts of bias like never before, textile bias (or the skew of woven material) offers an alternative view into the scripts of computational engagement. To probe this potential, this essay engages a range of feminist and anti-racist interventions in performance arts, critical archival studies, and my own pedagogic…

Medium Design
Who is a medium designer? If you’re hoping to find out, you’re barking up the wrong book (review). There is no particular medium designer, at least not in the sense of a person enrolled in the work
Accounting for Design Activism
We use two cases of design activism to examine designers' forms of positionality—or, the relations that enter into the formation of design interventions and the ways that a designer's situation affects the matter of those designs. We argue, by recognizing the stakes of their interventions and by mapping their contingencies, designers call into question the promise of their reforms—opening opportunities for responsive revision

Legacies of craft and the centrality of failure in a mother-operated hackerspace
Popular portraits of hacking have often relied on histories of hobbyist engineering culture rooted in tales of middle-class, college-educated, and often male technologists. Since 2012, members of a mother-operated hackerspace in the East Bay of San Francisco, California, have countered these narratives, revealing hackerspaces as sites with which to refigure masculine claims to innovation and progress. Drawing on critical craft studies and studies…
Making Citizens, Reassembling Devices
Roughly once a month, small groups of volunteers gather at local museums, libraries, and other public venues to help visitors fix their broken stuff. Designated Repair Cafes, Fixit Clinics, or Fixers Collectives, the organizations bring together contemporary environmentalist concerns with time-honored techniques: disassembling toasters that no longer heat, testing Bluetooth devices without signals, and removing dust from unplayable iPods. This es…

Binding and aging
In many respects, we take the age of things for granted. Age is assumed to be an inherent quality, dictated by the time a thing has been in existence and put to use. Many of us have even developed an appreciation for the wear associated with age. The worn leather covers of old books, their mottled pages and the creases along their spines are all considered, in some circles at least, to be signs of age and thus value. This article examines such id…

Materiality matters---experience materials
ACM CHI 2012 conference organized a panel titled 'Material Interactions - From Atoms and Bits to Entangled Practices'. The panel was specifically arranged to discuss assemblages of digital and physical materials and how these compositions might form and enable new experiences, as well as questions related to how we might conceptualize the inseparability of digital materials, user experiences, and the social context. While the panelists agreed tha…

From drills to laptops
We introduce two case studies that illuminate a particular way of conceptualizing childhood and technology: the East Bay Fixit Clinic and the One Laptop Per Child project. Both cases borrow ideologies of childhood from contemporary American culture and ideas of technological potential from computer cultures. The developers and organizers in these two groups ground the resulting narrative in their own childhood experiences and their desire to prov…

Reshaping the limits of design in HCI
This forum highlights conversations at the intersection of design methods and social studies of technology. By highlighting a diversity of perspectives on design interventions and programs, we aim to forge new connections between HCI design and communication, science and technology studies, and media studies scholarship. --- Daniela K. Extensions from the 'field
Community + Culture features practitioner perspectives on designing technologies for and with communities. We highlight compelling projects and provocative points of view that speak to both community technology practice and the interaction design field as a whole. --- Christopher A. Le Dantec, Editor

Producing Printability
Three-dimensional printing is widely celebrated as enabling open design and manufacturing practice. With easy-to-use techniques such as automated modeling, fabrication machines ostensibly help designers turn ideas into fully fledged objects. Prior HCI literature focuses on improving printing through optimization and by developing printer and material capabilities. This paper expands such considerations by asking, how do 3D printing practitioners …
