The Effect of Online Cart Composition on Cart Abandonment
Online shopping cart abandonment is widespread, causing major losses in potential revenues for e-commerce companies. We expand efforts to mitigate cart abandonment by investigating how the cart’s product composition affects abandonment and testing easy-to-implement interventions. We hypothesize that consumers are more likely to abandon carts containing a higher proportion of hedonic relative to utilitarian products. This cart composition effect a…
Choice bracketing and experience‐based choice
We examine how choice bracketing affects expected value maximization in experience‐based choice. Experience‐based choices are a series of individual choices made sequentially, for which feedback follows each choice, and are thus naturally bracketed narrowly. Previous research broadly bracketed multiple experience‐based choices for decision makers by aggregating the choices (such that each choice pertained to multiple individual choices) or by red…
The Attraction Effect in Experience‐based Decisions
Previous demonstrations of the attraction effect were limited to explicitly described attribute values (including numerically indexed attributes, such as gambles' outcomes and their likelihoods, or perceptual attributes, such as rectangles' height and width). However, in many real‐life decisions, such as the choice of a preferred grocer, people decide based on their past experience with the options' attributes (e.g., the frequency and magnitude o…
Retailer Pricing Strategy and Consumer Choice under Price Uncertainty
This research examines how consumers choose retailers when they are uncertain about store prices prior to shopping. Simulating everyday choice, participants made successive retailer choices where on each occasion they chose a retailer and only then learned product prices. The results of a series of studies demonstrated that participants were more likely to choose a retailer that offered an everyday low pricing strategy (EDLP) or that offered freq…
