  • Law and Modernization in the Church of England

Josef L Altholz, Robert E Rodes•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Religion•2001

Rodes examines the legal materials (cases, statutes, canons, and measures) used in the English experience of updating the medieval synthesis of church and state. • A Tale of Two Controversies

    Open Access•Josef L Altholz•ARTICLE•Church History•1994

The intellectual crisis of Victorian faith was a tale of two books. Charles Darwin's Origin of Species was published on 28 November, 1859; a composite volume of biblical criticism, Essays and Reviews , six of whose seven authors were clergymen, appeared on 21 March 1860. Both volumes provoked controversies. The Darwinian controversy is remembered and the biblicalcontroversy is largely forgotten, and perhaps in the longue durŕe of history this oug…

    Open Access•Josef L Altholz•ARTICLE•Church History•1982

The composite volume entitled Essays and Reviews , published in 1860, became the center of one of the major religious controversies of Victorian England—a crisis of faith contemporary with that provoked by Darwin's Origin of Species but more central to the religious mind. Essays and Reviews was at once the culmination and the final act of the Broad Church movement. The volume itself was modest in its pretensions and varied in the character and qu…

Open Access•John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton, Richard Simpson et al.•BOOK•The Correspondence of Lord Acton…•1975

Lord Acton (1834–1902) and Richard Simpson (1820–76) were the principal figures in the Liberal Catholic movement of nineteenth-century England, an ultimately unsuccessful effort to reconcile the Roman Catholic Church with the leading secular thought of the day. They collaborated in editing the Rambler (1858–62) and the Home and Foreign Review (1862–4), two of the most distinguished Catholic periodicals of the period. The correspondence is the rec…

  • Truth and Equivocation

    Open Access•Josef L Altholz•ARTICLE•Church History•1975

Newman's Apologia pro vita sua is remembered as a work of literature, a lasting monument of religious autobiography. Yet it was also a work of religious controversy, perhaps the most ephemeral of literary genres. Indeed, it was primarily a work of controversy; Newman, who almost never wrote except for an occasion, had called upon autobiography as the ultimate debating technique in a dispute which had come to center upon the personal honesty of on…

In the current revision of Victorian history — shattering the stereotypes of parties and classes and emphasizing instead the unpatterned variations of individual and factional bargaining — political history tends to reduce itself to the social history of special groups. Among these groups are the religious sects and movements, whose effective political activity is a notable feature of the nineteenth century. One such group, however, the Roman Cat…
