Perceived Naturalness Biases Objective Behavior in Both Trivial and Meaningful Contexts
Research shows that perceived naturalness can bias beliefs about the positivity of items such as food, human talent, and vaccines. Yet, this research focuses on self-reports, which leaves open the implications it has for behavior. In four studies ( N = 492), we tested if perceived naturalness impacts trivial and meaningful behaviors. Participants were asked to consume a purported natural/synthetic performance drink (Study 1), test a purported nat…
The Last Battle of the Civil War: United States versus Lee, 1861-1883
Following the death of Robert E. Lee in December 1870, Senator Oliver Morton of Indiana denounced a bill that proposed to compensate his widow, Mary Custis Lee, for the wartime seizure of her estate at Arlington, Virginia, the site of the great national military cemetery. The Senate should devote scant time to “the rights of the widow of the arch-rebel of the most wicked rebellion in history,” Morton thundered, and the bill was defeated 54–4 (p. …

The Making of Robert E. Lee
Two biographical studies could scarcely present a greater contrast in approaches than The Making of Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant do. Brooks D. Simpson's Grant, while making ample use of quotations from its protagonist, nevertheless approaches him from outside, with Simpson a spectator observing his growth as a soldier and in personal character. Michael Fellman's Lee is not strictly speaking a biography, but rather an analysis of the mind an…

The rule of moderation in late nineteenth‐century American sexual ideology
Late nineteenth-century America, characterized by intense mobility and change, produced anxious social orphans who were cut off from many traditional ties, left almost completely ungoverned and unprotected by the state, and set adrift in the complex new cities. Family and church could no longer provide stable bases for support and moral direction. Many people, in their search for individual and social blueprints, turned to less immediate advisors…
Theatre for Working-Class Audiences in the United States, 1830-1980
This collection of essays defines and explores American theatres that consciously appealed primarily to workers. The scope of the book extends from the 1830s to the 1980s. Different authors focus on how various plays related to the audience as a class, the historically dynamic interaction between spectators and actors, and why certain plays gained popularity. The collection encompasses essays concerning New York theatre in the 1830s and 1840s, Pi…

A Joyful Noyes: Reassessing America's Utopian Tradition
Sexual Longing in Richard Henry Dana, Jr.'s American Victorian Diary
As a genre, diaries are now past their fashion. Literate, but essentially unconscious self-revelation, the hallmark of the diary form, is unlikely in our culture, where we are all psychologically aware at least to the degree that we know every utterance means something, some repression betrayed. In the nineteenth century ladies would faint and would have protracted illnesses of an unspecific nature, and men would openly de- clare their love for o…

He had expressed desires generally forbidden in his society. The Presidential Address to the Canadian Association for American Studies, Banff, Alberta, October 28,1983. "He that commiteth sin is of the devil." When John Humphrey Noyes, a twenty- two year old theology student preached that text to his Yale Divinity School colleagues one afternoon in 1834, he knew full well the religious and personal implications. That night he "received the baptism" of freedom from sin in this life forbidden to neoCalvinist…
