  • A Study on Hydration Reactions Involved in the Reduction of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) by Hydroponic Vegetated Biofilters

Open Access•Jae Young Lee, Y Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of People, Plants, and…•2025

Background and objective: Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a prominent component of nitrogen oxides (NOx), is recognized as a major air pollutant. This gaseous pollutant significantly contributes to the secondary formation of ultrafine particulate matter (PM2.5) through atmospheric chemical reactions. While nature-based solutions (NbS), such as the use of plants, have been explored as environmentally friendly mitigation strategies, the effectiveness of re…

  • Chemical Characteristics of Particulate Matter in Underground Shopping Malls

Open Access•Jae Young Lee, Tae Han Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of People, Plants, and…•2025

Background and objective: Underground shopping malls within multi-use facilities are subject to indoor air quality regulations. In these environments, particulate matter (PM) is both deposited and resuspended due to external influxes and pedestrian activity. Combined with various chemical species, this PM can potentially induce a range of adverse health effects. This study aims to investigate the chemical characteristics and potential human healt…

  • Purification Effect of Vegetation Biofilters on Particulate Transition Metals in Multi-Use Facilities

Open Access•Tae Han Kim, Tae-Han Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of People, Plants, and…•2023

Background and objective: Among multi-use facilities, underground subway stations are vulnerable areas where total management of particulate matter (PM) has been implemented through the Seasonal PM Management System. Through the friction between train wheels and railsthat occurs subway stations, iron oxide particles are generated, which can cause various diseases in the human body. This study aims to explore the application of plants to biofilter…

  • Are Particulate Pollutants Emitted by Open-Burning of Agricultural Plastic Waste (Greenhouse LDPE Film) Harmful

Open Access•Tae Han Kim, Tae-Han Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of People, Plants, and…•2022

Background and objective: Agricultural plastic waste (APW), which includes various types of plastics and greenhouse film, accounts for the largest volume of annual average incineration of plastic (Korea Environment Corporation, 2021). Open-burning incineration of such APW emits metallic particulate pollutants, the human hazard of which is widely known. As such, the systematic management of incinerable APW is required. Furthermore, basic physicoch…

  • Basic Research for the Development of a Vegetation Biofilter Operation Algorithm in a Subway Station

Open Access•Tae-Han Kim, Joongjin Kook•ARTICLE•Journal of People, Plants, and…•2022

Background and objective We measured the particulate matter (PM) reduction rate when the vegetation biofilter operated for 1 hour every 6 hours. As a result of data analysis, PM concentrations in the subway station showed a high correlation with the train stop duration depending on the service frequency of train operations, and the reduction rate was high in the section where PM concentrations as well as the change rates were high. Therefore, in …

  • A Study on the Enhancement of Inventories for Precursors (NOx, SOx) Released from Open Burning of Agricultural Waste Vinyl Causing the Secondary Generation of Particulate Matters

    Open Access•Tae-Han Kim, Boo-Hun Choi•ARTICLE•Journal of People, Plants, and…•2021

Background and objective: While response measures to particulate matters in rural areas are limited due to poor inventory record keeping in the agricultural sector, it is necessary to control agricultural waste vinyl and the emission of precursors released from open burning and the secondary generation of particulate matters. Currently, the open burning emission calculation method uses the definition prescribed in CAPSS by the National Institute …

  • Analysis of Chemical Compounds of Gaseous and Particulate Pollutants from the Open Burning of Agricultural HDPE Film Waste

Open Access•Tae-Han Kim, Boo-Hun Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of People, Plants, and…•2021

Background and objective Illegal open-air incineration, which is criticized as a leading source of air pollutants among agricultural activities, currently requires constant effort and attention. Countries around the world have been undertaking studies on the emission of heavy metal substances in fine dust discharged during the incineration process. A precise analytical method is required to examine the harmful effects of particulate pollutants on…

  • A Pilot Study of Improving the Atmospheric Environment of Classroom for Students' Learning Activities

Open Access•Tae-Han Kim, Hanju Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of People, Plants, and…•2021

Background and objective: Plant-based biofilter system has become a promising candidate for improving indoor air quality due to its eco-friendly and sustainable nature. However, it remains controversial whether indoor air purification using a biofilter is effective. Methods: This study used the one-group pre-and post-test design to analyze the effects of the operation of the plant-based biofilter system on indoor air quality, students' perception…

  • A Study on Pressure Loss by the Material of AHU-linked Vegetation Bio-filter and its Operational Energy Efficiency

Open Access•Tae-Han Kim, So-Dam Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of People, Plants, and…•2017

Recently, the air quality issue came to the fore to the occupants of indoor areas with the detection of a large amount of indoor air pollutants such as formaldehyde that causes headache and atopic dermatitis. In order to address this issue, the use of indoor air purifying plants is considered positively as an ecological improvement option. However, the objective performance verification on indoor air-conditioning air volume has not been sufficien…

  • Assessment of Plant Growth Stability on Vegetation Unit-based Bio-filter linked to AHU

Open Access•Tae-Han Kim, Sung-Eun Park et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of People, Plants, and…•2017

People today spend 80% of their time indoors and have been showing keen interests in air quality since 2015 due to harmful chemical issues such as humidifier disinfectants. Although plant-based air purification method is widely known to the public, its objective performance and air-conditioning efficiency have been limited. In particular, in the case of publicly used places frequented by many and unspecified persons, high air-conditioning wind vo…
