"This first comprehensive history of Spanish literature to be published in English since the 1970s brings together experts from the USA, the United Kingdom, and Spain. Together, the essays cover the full range of Spanish poetry, prose, and theatre from the early Middle Ages to the present day. The classics of the canon of eleven centuries of Spanish literature are covered, from Berceo, Cervantes and Calderon to Garcia Lorca and Martin Gaite, but …

This is the first comprehensive study of the theatre of nineteenth-century Spain, a most important genre which produced more than 10,000 plays during the course of the century. John Dowling, David Thatcher Gies•ARTICLE•South Atlantic Review•1989

The Frenchman Juan de Grimaldi was instrumental in the development of the Spanish theatre in the 1820s and 30s, at a time when censorship, repression, and economic chaos had left it in a state of stagnation. As impresario and stage director, he trained actors in the new style of declamation, made physical changes in sets and lighting, translated recent French plays into Spanish, and encouraged the writing of original Spanish plays. His own magica…

WHAT is Romanticism? This question eludes a satisfactory answer, although critics are in general agreement that there exists no single Spanish Romanticism. Surely it would be foolhardy in the extreme to suggest that the Romanticism of Mel6ndez Vald6s is the same as that of Zorrilla, that Cadalso's is equal to that of Martfnez de la Rosa, that Dur,n and Espronceda shared a common aesthetic, that Quintana and Becquer expressed themselves alike, or …
