Social Support Structures and Predictors of Depression in Persons Who Are Seropositive
Survey data from 87 seropositive individuals were analysed to assess the extent to which: (1) the social-support network changes over the course of three levels of seropositivity (HIV asymptomatic, HIV symptomatic and AIDS); (2) certain types of support providers are associated with lower depression; and (3) the relative contribution of support network diversity, emotional support from several categories of providers (family of origin, friends, s…

Development of the `Romantic Beliefs Scale' and Examination of the Effects of Gender and Gender-Role Orientation
Through a program of research, a scale was developed to measure beliefs that have been identified in the literature as constituting an ideology of romanticism. The final scale items were selected and subjected to several reliability and validity tests in a survey study conducted with 730 undergraduate students. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting the likelihood that a disengaged romantic relationship will be redefined as a friendship rather than completely terminated. College students were surveyed about a recalled romantic relationship that either broke up or evolved into a friendship. Respondents answered questions regarding characteristics of the relationship prior to its decline, strategies used to disengage the relation…
An Exploratory Investigation of Deception in Close Relationships
This study explores the form and function of deception in close relationships. Free response descriptions of situations involving the deception of a relational partner were obtained from 357 university students and other adults. Descriptions were coded for type of deceptive communication, antecedent condition, type of information and reasons given for being deceptive. Results indicated that falsification was the most frequently reported type of d…
Coping with Embarrassing Predicaments
Two studies into the use and perceived utility of remedial strategies for coping with embarrassing predicaments are reported. In both studies, subjects were presented with two scenarios depicting embarrassing situations: one representing a loss of poise, and the other representing an inappropriate indentity display.
