Religious Metaphor in Malaysian Political Speeches After the 1997-1999 Financial Crisis
This study examines the use of religious metaphor in Malaysian political speeches delivered in response to the unprecedented 1997-1999 financial Asian crisis, which originated in Thailand and spread to other Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia. It focuses on how religious metaphors were used to criticise the dogmatic commitment of free market proponents who promoted market liberalism as the sole solution to the crisis, thereby advancing…
English Loanwords in Malay: Identifying Patterns in Academic Magazines
English loanwords have become an important feature of contemporary Malay, particularly in domains shaped by global knowledge, technology and academic discourse. However, previous studies have often treated loanwords as descriptive lists or as general evidence of language contact, with less attention to their lexical distribution and structural integration in Malay. This study adopts a corpus-based approach to examine English loanwords in Malay ac…
Giving advice in HIV counselling in Malaysia
In HIV counselling, giving advice is the core activity to help people living with HIV (PLHIV) make positive behaviour change. Malay nurse counsellors, however, face considerable challenges in eliciting information on patients’ sexuality and sexual behaviour, due to the socio-cultural context in which well-defined attitudes about sexuality and precise ideas of accepted sexual practices prevail. Against this backdrop and drawing primarily from Conv…
Effects of Task Complexity on Chinese EFL Learners’ Language Production in Synchronous Computer-Mediated Communication
The pervasive use of synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) in second language (L2) learning has generated increasing interest among researchers in integrating SCMC with task-based language teaching (TBLT). This study examined the effects of task complexity on Chinese EFL learners’ language production in SCMC modality to develop optimal tasks that facilitate the learning of English in SCMC environments. Eighty-four intermediate Chines…
Managing Harvesting for Forest Sustainability in Malaysia: An SFL Perspective
Forest management practices have been addressed widely in the forestry discipline but are rarely considered from a linguistic perspective. Linguistic exploration of the construction of meaning in forest discourses helps provide greater detail on how forest resources are governed through the forest management practices carried out by forestry professionals. This study adopted the approach from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and Halliday’s I…
Metaphor in Mahathir’s political speeches in the context of economic crisis
This study draws on Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory to examine the use of metaphors in business-related political speeches by Mahathir Mohamad in 2000, a year which marked a turning point for Malaysia as it recovered from the Asian financial crisis of 1997–1999. We adopt Charteris-Black's three-step procedure for metaphor analysis, from identification to interpretation and explanation. The predominant patterns of metaphor use incl…
New Tools for Old Tasks: A Digital Approach to the Investigation of the Malay Language
Digital tools designed for linguistic analysis offer new ways of approaching old tasks, and they now routinely enable tasks which were formerly impossible. The work for this paper is based on MaLex, which is a collection of data tables and procedures designed to represent the intuitive knowledge of speakers of Malay, and provides the infrastructure for the solution of problems in linguistic analysis. This paper reports the use of the MaLex parser…
Assessing ESL undergraduate performance in a group oral test: Rater orientations
Group oral testing has attracted increasing interests in performance-based assessment, mainly due to its ability to measure interactional competence. Increasing attention has consequently been paid to the performance of raters, whose orientations have an impact on the scores in view of their role as mediators between performances and scores. Studies have shown that despite training, raters’ personal constructs can lead to different assessments. T…
Tagging L2 Writing: Learner Errors and the Performance of an Automated Part-of-Speech Tagger
This paper is concerned with the application of technologies developed in other disciplines, in particular with the use of text processing techniques to investigate the problems of second language learner writing in English. The question addressed is whether learner texts produced by L1-Malay learners at the University of Malaya can usefully be processed using the Constituent Likelihood Automatic Word-tagging System (CLAWS); a part-of-speech (POS…
Language Contact and its Linguistic Consequences Due to Migration at the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh
This study explores the effects of recent language contact created in the Chittagong Hill-Tracts(CHT) through the immigration of Bangla speaking people from other parts of Bangladesh. The CHT, which borders India and Myanmar, has been the abode of approximately one million people, approximately 50% of whom are of minority speech communities, including the speakers of Tibeto-Burman (TB) languages such as Marma, Tripura (Kokborok), Kyang, and Khumi…
The overweight female body in Malaysian slimming advertisements: Problem and solution
This study analyses image and text to investigate the way slimming advertising exploits women’s fear of being overweight to the extent that they feel obliged to do something about their own bodies. We show how Malaysian slimming advertisements construct certain types of female body which reinforce cultural stereotypes, namely the overweight body that exceeds culturally acceptable limits of desirable body size, and the desirable and attainable sli…
Voices of girls with disabilities in rural Iran
This paper investigates the interaction of gender, disability and education in rural Iran, which is a relatively unexplored field of research. The responses of 10 female students with disabilities from Isfahan indicated that the obstacles they faced included marginalization, difficulties in getting from home to school, difficulties within the school building itself, and discrimination by teachers, classmates and school authorities. The data colle…
Representing immigrants as illegals, threats and victims in Malaysia: Elite voices in the media
This article examines the way the voices of political elites are incorporated in news reporting to represent refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia as illegals, threats and victims, which reflect their ideological positioning. We also examine voices that foreground their plight and appeal for the relaxation of rules. Selected extracts are analysed to illustrate how these voices and authorial accounts are ordered in relation to each other to repr…
Discourse and crisis: Critical Perspectives
The discursive representation of Iran’s supreme leader in online media
This study examines the interplay of politics, religion and discourse in the representation of the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in government-controlled news websites in Iran. It is grounded in critical discourse analysis (CDA), and Van Leeuwen’s social actor network model (2008) is used as the theoretical framework to analyse the linguistic representation of the Iranian leader. In the samples analysed, Khamenei is discursively depicted …
Creating an Education Research Acculturation Theory for Research Implementation in School
This study investigates the implementation of educational research among urban secondary schools in Malaysia. The respondents include school teachers and administrators, lecturers in education institutions, and committee members of the state education departments. Data collected from interviews were coded and analyzed using open, axial and selected coding procedures. Six core categories emerged from the data namely implementation initiative, impl…
Interactionally achieving face in criticism–criticism response exchanges
Achieve face relationally as integral part of meaning-action achievement but distinct. • Examiners predominantly orient to and project interpretings of separation. • Candidates orient to and project interpretings of connection and separation. • Criticisms put candidates in the position of having to defend themselves. • Candidates' defences are challenged by examiners. Arundale's Face Constituting Theory is used to examine the way face is conjoint…
The prosodic marking of information status in Malaysian English
This paper investigates the prosodic strategies used by Malaysian speakers of English to mark the information status of new and given discourse elements. Thirty speakers of Malaysian English were recorded both when playing a game designed by Swerts, Krahmer, and Avesani (2002) to elicit semi-spontaneous speech and when reading out a 179-word story. Pitch accent placement in the semi-spontaneous speech was analysed auditorily, while six given and …

Processing Natural Malay Texts: A Data-DRIVEN APPROACH; Pp. 90–103
This research represents the first attempt to produce a working system for the automatic processing of texts of Bahasa Melayu â Malayâ . At the heart of the system is an integrated relational lexical database called MALEX, which draws on the experience of working on English and other languages, but which is specifically tailored to the conditions of Malay. The development of the database is from the beginning entirely data driven, and is based on…
Nationhood and Malaysian identity: A corpus-based approach
In this article we make use of the methodology of corpus linguistics to organize and search the several millions of words contained in the published speeches of Tun Dr. Mahathir as prime minister. Our corpus consists of over 2.5 million words of speeches, roughly half in English and half in Malay, with over 900 English speeches and over 800 Malay speeches. This study concentrates on the Malay speeches, and follows up previous work on Dr. Mahathir…
Malaysian English: An Instrumental Analysis of Vowel Contrasts
This paper makes an instrumental analysis of English vowel monophthongs produced by 47 female Malaysian speakers. The focus is on the distribution of Malaysian English vowels in the vowel space, and the extent to which there is phonetic contrast between traditionally paired vowels. The results indicate that, like neighbouring varieties of English, Malaysian English vowels occupy a smaller vowel space than those of British English. The lack of con…

Requests: Voices of Malaysian children
To make a request is to express a desire for the addressee to do something, and because it bears a requirement to be complied with, a request is usually best achieved when performed with tact and politeness. Bach and Harnish (1984: 48) define the term request as ‘a speech act expressing the speaker's desire for the hearer to do something with the added proviso that the hearer takes this expressed desire as the reason to act’. This paper examines …
The notion of a “lemma”: Headwords, roots and lexical sets
The notion of a lemma is so familiar in corpus linguistics that it scarcely needs a formal definition. When a wordlist or a text is lemmatised, the process is apparently transparent, so that any observer can understand how the lemma relates to the original set or string of words. We shall argue in this paper that, on the contrary, the concept of lemma is not well defined, and is in need of a clear formal definition. The lemma is a fundamental con…
