Alveolar and Velarized Laterals in Albanian and in the Viennese Dialect
A comparison of alveolar and velarized lateral realizations in two language varieties, Albanian and the Viennese dialect, has been performed. Albanian distinguishes the two laterals phonemically, whereas in the Viennese dialect, the velarized lateral was introduced by language contact with Czech immigrants. A categorical distinction between the two lateral phonemes is fully maintained in Albanian. Results are not as straightforward in the Viennes…
Standard Austrian German
The development of Standard Austrian German (SAG; de-AT) is closely linked to the development of Standard German German (SGG; de-DE) as spoken in Northern Germany. Traditionally, SAG is strongly geared towards SGG norms. The orientation towards SGG norms goes back to at least 1750, when Maria Theresia ordered the adoption of the Upper Saxonian norms in place at that time (Ebner 1969, Wiesinger 1989). Since then, SAG pronunciation is modelled on S…
Phonotactic information in the temporal organization of Standard Austrian German and the Viennese dialect
The current contribution analyses quantifying prosodic aspects in two Middle Bavarian varieties, Standard Austrian German and the Viennese dialect. State of the art phonological accounts of the Middle Bavarian dialects assume a mutual interaction between vowel and consonant length: long vowels are followed by lenis consonants, short vowels are followed by fortis consonants, further vowel + consonant sequences are proscribed in the Middle Bavarian…
Evaluation of the speech behaviour of reference speakers
In forensic settings, when speech samples have to be compared, or in LADO investigations, it is crucial to be able to differentiate the speech behavior of cooperative speakers from the speech behavior of partly cooperative speakers. In order to perform this task, a comprehensive approach which encompasses knowledge from several linguistic subfields is needed. The theoretical framework of Natural Phonology which incorporates phonetic, phonological…
The influence of creaky voice on formant frequency changes
When disguising their voice, women may tend to lower their fundamental frequency so as to imitate a male’s voice. This implies a lowered fundamental frequency on the one hand and the production of creaky voice or creak over large sequences on the other. For speaker identification which additionally relies on formant frequency comparison, it is therefore of interest if the production of creaky voice implies an additional modification of the vocal …
The spread of Standard Albanian: An illustration based on an analysis of vowels
Modern Standard Albanian is a young variety, proclaimed in 1972 at the Congress of Orthography in Tirana. It is based on the Tosk variety, one of the two main varieties (Tosk and Gheg) of the Albanian language, which is spoken in the South of the country. The aim of the current investigation is to look at the way in which this Standard is realized by its representatives, the educated speakers of four geographical regions: South Albania, Middle Al…

"Natürliches Driften" im Lautwandel: Die Monophthongierung im österreichischen Deutsch
Can sound changes be predicted? And do they optimize systems, as is often assumed? In this paper we investigate these questions by looking at a still ongoing sound change in Austrian German: the monophthongization of the diphthongs /ae/ and /??/. Based on a detailed acoustic phonetic description of the changes of the diphthongs since the late fifties we show that sound change is triggered by principally predictable circumstances, but its outcome …

Diphthongs and the process of monophthongization in Austrian German: A first approach
Phonological variation in speaker identification
Phonological analysis is divided into regional and social dialect/standard variation and into the remaining phonological variation susceptible to individual variation. After a short description of the social and regional standard/dialect variation it will be argued that from the specific standard/dialect variation it is possible to determine geographical origins of the speaker in question, his or her social status, and regional and social mobilit…
Evaluation of Language Use in Public Discourse: Language Attitudes in Austria
The study of how language use is evaluated is a large field and this chapter will concentrate on one specific aspect and on one German-speaking context: attitudes towards linguistic variation in public discourse in Austria. In order to do this, it is necessary to begin with a brief outline of the general language situation in Austria.
