NCSA 2023 Presidential Address All Together Now: Sociology as a Liberal Art and a Liberating Practice
In the curricula of colleges and universities in North America, the discipline of sociology is a relative newcomer. During scarcely more than a century since the founding of the first American degree programs in sociology, little agreement has emerged over what sociology actually is or does. Rather than regard this dizzying diversity as a source of confusion and consternation, though, might we ponder what would happen to us and our efforts if, in…

Political Secularism, Religion, and the State: A Time Series Analysis of Worldwide Data
Trends in Religiosity and Religious Affiliation
This essay examines studies of trends in religion and religiosity, concentrating on the case of the United States but periodically comparing that country to other societies as well. The summary of research opens with an overview of the putative wisdom received from the once‐dominant belief in the process of secularization. It proceeds to a consideration of American habits of religious affiliation and switching, followed by a discussion of rates o…
The Protestant Ethic Revisited
If there are scholars of religion who have been away from journal-reading for a while and who desire an intensive exposure to the best historical and comparative work about their topic that has filled the pages of the main professional publications and several edited collections during the past 15 years, they could do no better than to seek out this theory-laden and fact-heavy yet gracefully executed book. Its author, Philip S. Gorski, is one of …

The Robert Bellah Reader
It is difficult to imagine a reader of this journal who would not be familiar, in some degree, with the work of Robert N. Bellah. After writing an award-winning baccalaureate thesis at Harvard (1950) on the kinship systems of the Apache nation, Bellah pursued specialized studies on Japan and, while in Canada for two years of refuge during the McCarthy era, on the Islamic Middle East. “It seems,” he reflects in the Introduction to this volume, “th…

Clio Goes to Church: Revisiting and Revitalizing Historical Thinking in the Sociology of Religion
To be a member of any human community is to situate oneself with regard to one's (its) past, if only by rejecting it. The is therefore a permanent dimension of the human consciousness, an inevitable component of the institutions, values and other patterns of human society. The problem for historians is to analyse the nature of this sense of the past in society and to trace its changes and transformations. -Eric Hobsbawm (1 997a: 10)

Salaries and Race in Professional Baseball: Discrimination 10 Years Later
A series of multiple regression analyses using the most recent publicly available data on the salaries of veteran hitters in major league baseball uncovers little evidence of economic discrimination by race. Comparisons of unstandardized regression coefficients for player variables, by race and position, reveal a number of instances of inequality. However, these inequalities do not occur consistently with respect to the same type of performance, …

Salary Discrimination in Major League Baseball: The Effect of Race
Using data on the salaries of 212 nonpitchers appearing in team lineups on major league baseball’s 1977 Opening Day, this article explores how rewards to veteran professionals are influenced by race. Multiple regression analyses and separate comparisons of regression coefficients for returns to performances by blacks and by whites reveal a single indication of salary discrimination against blacks. White infielders are apparently paid more for eac…
Church as a Family Surrogate: Another Look at Family Ties, Anomie, and Church Involvement
This paper examines the hypothesis that adults without complete ties (i.e., never-married, widowed, divorced, separated, or married but childless persons) resort to increased religious participation as a means of relieving anomie and gaining in church the comfort and companionship not available to them in their homes. This family theory of church involvement, put forward by Glock et aL (1967) in a study of urban parishioners of the Episcopal Chur…

Religion and Radical Labor Unionism: American States in the 1920's
Some social scientists have suspected that participation in radical movements satisfies human yearnings for transcendence just as does religious involvement. Accordingly, they have claimed that a pronounced though inverse relationship ought to exist between political extremism and commitment to traditional religion. Aggregate data support this position. Whole geographical regions such as the American West seem both to repel incursion by the insti…
Numbering Israel”: The U.S. Census and Religious Organizations
“There simply are no reliable historical statistics on church membership,” writes a prominent sociologist of religion, Glock (1959: 39), “and it is extremely doubtful that accurate statistics can be produced through manipulating the unreliable ones.” Problems have so regularly hampered the collection of religious statistics in the United States that historians as well normally hold them in disrepute (Landis, 1957). “Nothing is more elusive in chu…

Religion in Sociological Perspective
Outline: In this book, based on lectures that the author was invited to deliver in Japan, the author traces the dominant contours of religion as perceived by the sociologist. His themes range from the study of sectarianism, on which he is one of the world's leading authorities, to the subtleties of the relationship between religion and culture in modern societies of the West and the East. Although firmly committed to a comparative perspective, th…

Religious Diversity and Social Change: American Cities, 1890–1906
Floods of immigration and rapid industrialization and urbanization in America at the turn of the century set in motion the transformation of many long-established institutions. This book examines specific ways in which cultural changes affected the structure of the religious establishment. Statistical models are applied to United States Census data from 1890 and 1906 on city and church populations, revealing connections between the growth of citi…

Is God a Racist? The Right Wing in Canada
God is a racist'--so goes a statement published in the literature of the Western Guard, a white-supremacist, anti-semitic group in Toronto. It is one of a number of racist organizations that have sprung up in Canada since the Second World War. Stanley Barrett points out in this disquieting study that although many of the principles of such organizations are offensive to the vast majority of Canadians, they represent a growing part of a broader po…

Knowing the Difference: A Response
I should not begin my response without first thanking Professors Mulkey, Persell, Shelton, and Stoddart for writing about their reactions to my essay. In each case, I can see that they gave my arguments a careful and considered reading, and in return they provided criticism that is in the best tradition of collegial exchange. As if that were not reason enough to be grateful, in several instances the critics have identified problematic aspects of …
"Peter L. Berger's "Invitation to Sociology: Twenty-Five Years of RSVPs
Although Peter L. Berger's Invitation to Sociology (1963) was published more than 25 years ago, itremainsone ofthemostwidely adopted, anthologized, and cited ofthe many introductory books in the field. Berger's book, however, has received surprisingly little critical attention since its publication. The purpose of this analysis is to reconsider the place ofthis classic work in teaching undergraduate sociology. Accordingly, this article charts the…
