Macroeconomic Forecasting Using Pooled International Data
Applied Time Series Analysis of Economic Data
Estimating Gross Labor-Force Flows
We present and apply an adjustment procedure for the Bureau of the Census and Bureau of Labor Statistics gross labor-force flows data that addresses two major defects in the data. First, an adjustment procedure is developed to take account of individuals with missing labor-force classifications who are not missing at random. Second, we provide a procedure for adjustment for individuals with spurious labor-force transitions arising because of clas…
Basic Issues in Econometrics
A Note on the Relationship of Minimum Expected Loss (Melo) and Other Structural Coefficient Estimates
In previous work (Zellner, 1978) structural coefficient estimates that minimize the posterior expectation of a generalized quadratic loss function were derived. On computing these minimum expected loss (MELO) estimates for coefficients of Klein's Model I and the Girschick-Haavelmo supply and demand model for food, it was found that the MELO coefficient estimates have values between corresponding direct least squares (DLS) and two stage least squa…

A Study of Some Aspects of Temporal Aggregation Problems in Econometric Analyses
T EMPORAL aggregation problems in econometrics pose an important but relatively unexplored set of issues relevant for analyses of economic behavior and policy problems. When the behavior of individuals, firms or other economic entities is analyzed with temporally aggregated data, it is quite possible that a distorted view of parameters' values, lag structures and other aspects of economic behavior can be obtained. Since policy decisions usually d…
Three-Stage Least Squares
An Efficient Method of Estimating Seemingly Unrelated Regressions and Tests for Aggregation Bias
In this paper a method of estimating the parameters of a set of regression equations is reported which involves application of Aitken's generalized least-squares [1] to the whole system of equations. Under conditions generally encountered in practice, it is found that the regression coefficient estimators so obtained are at least asymptotically more efficient than those obtained by an equation-by-equation application of least squares. This gain i…

Rejoinder to Professor Bolino's Note
Professor Bolino makes a number of comments on our article, "Sequential Growth, the Labor Safety-Valve Doctrine and the Development of American Unionism," in this journal, September 1959, which certainly call for some rejoinder on our part
Sequential Growth, the Labor-Safety-Valve Doctrine and the Development of American Unionism
“Let those who will consult the spirit rappers to bring forth its ghost.” Such was Professor Shannon's firm caveat as he laid Frederick Jackson Turner's safety-valve doctrine to rest after a post mortem performed with some gusto. The warning seems to have had the effect intended. Although Turner's frontier concept continues to influence the work of American historians and not a few economists the labor-safety-valve doctrine seems generally to hav…

Consumption and the Consumption Function in the U.S. 1948-1949 Recession
CONSUMPTION has been cast as both villain and hero in the 1948-49 recession in the United States. It has been asserted that a weakening of consumption was important in accounting for the downturn. R. A. Gordon cites the levelling off of consumer demand as one of several factors responsible for the downturn.1 D. Hamberg has suggested an underconsumptionist explanation of the downturn.2 Even C. A. Blyth who set out to prove that the most important …
