    Saki Dockrill, Saki R Dockrill•ARTICLE•Diplomatic History•2010

After the end of World War II, U.S. foreign policy became important not only to the United States itself, but also to the Western world. The Cold War intensified when the Korean War broke out, and the West was concerned that the Soviet Union might resort to the use of weapons, including unconventional ones, to achieve its political goals. We now know that the Warsaw Pact war plans indeed encouraged the use of nuclear weapons liberally from centra…

In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States, the Bush Administration enunciated the doctrine of preemption, and implemented it by attacking Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. This article examines the dilemmas posed by the strategy of preemption and discusses how the Iraq war has so far failed to meet the test of legitimacy. It argues that the Iraq experience has weakened U.S. power, set back liberal internationalism, and placed the United…

    Saki Dockrill•ARTICLE•Diplomacy and Statecraft•2000•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Prior to the advent of the Wilson government, there existed a large number of official memoranda and reports on Britain's power and influence in the world. Central to Whitehall's concern was the discovery of some means of reducing the cost of maintaining Britain's three main strategic roles ‐ nuclear deterrence, the defence of western Europe and East of Suez. It was clear that Britain should not, and could not, maintain these three roles indefini…

This article investigates the initial phase of the relationship between the Harold Wilson government and the Lyndon Johnson administration. Despite the generally held view that relations between these two countries were neither warm or close or that Wilson was more anxious to establish a close partnership with the United States than Johnson was with Britain, the article will show that this view is rather superficial. On the contrary, it was the J…

The death of Hirohito on 7 January 1989 provided the Japanese with an opportunity of reappraising the Showa era, as Hirohito's reign is called in the Japanese calendar. This lasted for sixty-two years, which the press described as years of ‘turmoil and drastic changes.’ While the role of the Emperor and, to a greater degree, the role of the military in imperial Japan have been long-running themes for historians, intellectuals, and journalists, Hi…
